Relevant Experience

by rainmaker » Thu Jul 23, 2009 5:40 pm
Hi,

I am a computer science guy. I have been working for the past 3 years. I am a techie with no managerial experience whatsoever. I'm interested in doing MBA. My gpa/grades have always been pretty good and I'm confident that I will get a good GMAT score as well. But I feel my techie experience does not qualify as been relevant as far as MBA applications go.

My question is how do people from similar background manage in MBA applications? How do they get the relevant experience? What all things I can do in order to strengthen my application. Any ideas welcome.

Thanks a ton!

Hi and thanks for your question. One common misconception about MBA programs is that they are only for people with management experience; in fact, they are usually described (by the programs) as being for people with "management potential."

I think you will find that the essays usually do not require you to describe a management experience though sometimes management experiences are relevant and useful. Similarly, if you have done well in your job --even in a technical field-- that is usually enough.

I understand your concern so I think I would be focused on making sure that your experience is rich rather than management-specific and that you can make a case for benefitting from the experience of an MBA. That is, can you build a bridge between where you're coming and where you want to go and is the shortest and most efficient bridge between those two places an MBA.

Does that make sense? Of course, if you're having trouble positioning getting a consultant is often cost-effective in the long run.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.
