Chances for top 4 MBA program?

by janderson » Mon Jan 12, 2009 2:16 pm
Hi, wanted to get some perspective on my chances of getting into columbia, hbs, stanford, or wharton...

Stats: 3.3 gpa from tier 1 school, math major. gpa is low because of premed courses, but have above a 3.5 in math/stats/bus classes. 710 (92%) on gmat.
Work: Started business specializing in vintage clothing and sneakers. Get several $100k in sales/yearly. Done this for just a few years.
Community: Mentor and Tutor to two inner city kids through Big Brother Big Sisters of America for past few years.

Also, will have great letters from peers and colleagues. Application centers on entrep focus and is what I plan to focus on in mba program.
I know mba schools usually don't like or won't accept additional info for apps ... but i know i can score 30-40 points higher on the gmat. I was averaging a 740-750 on my practice exams and had a very bad day the day i took the gmat - should i take it again in the next few weeks and send score to schools or will they not accept it/not worth the hassle?

Is my gpa too low for any of these schools? columbia?
Or does rest of applic. give me uniqueness and a shot at getting in?

Your profile looks good and you definitely have some unique aspects to your background. Another 30 - 40 points on your GMAT would be an added bonus if you think it is a realistic goal. Since you are aiming for top programs, be sure to spend a significant amount of time (approx. 30 - 40 hrs.) on each application, visit campus, and thoroughly prepare for your interviews.
