Rotman vs Booth - Family Business

I am a Canadian engineer currently working in a Toronto-based family business that manufactures and sells electronic products in US and European markets. I am currently deciding between Rotman and Booth full time MBA programs. Given that I plan on returning to my family business post-grad and eventually take over as CEO, which school would you suggest? What advantages would you find in one school over the other given that post-grad job recruiting is not very important to me?

Hi there - if your plan is to stay with the family business and grow it, then it comes down to balancing brand and education with opportunity cost. If you believe you'll get what you need from Rotman, go for it, but the Booth name carries a lot of weight and it could help you in more strategic ways down the road! Rotman is a fantastic program, don't get me wrong, but if you're choosing between the two, go with Booth.

Hi,

I really appreciate your insight in this decision I have to make. Could you please elaborate on some of the ways the Booth name might carry more weight and strategic benefits than Rotman down the line?

Hey there - I see two main reasons. First off, the network in your industry will be stronger - especially if you sell in the US - you might find those level of connections helpful. Secondly, it will give you a bit more weight behind your name as you take the reigns. A tertiary reason is simply the education - the flexibility allows you to focus where you want and you'll get access to their entrepreneurial resources through it.

Have you considered applying to Wharton or Kellogg, which are both strong for Family Enterprise / Business?

In comparing programs specifically within Family Enterprise, check whether schools have a Research Center, dedicated family business classes, mentorship programs, etc.

I agree with Bhavik about the potential network which provide unforeseen professional and personal benefits.
