Profile evaluation: 670: INSEAD

by chillinpriyanka » Mon Sep 10, 2012 12:56 pm
Hello Sir,

Could you please review my profile and my chances of getting an admit from INSEAD and also suggest some good bschools apt for my profile? I am very particular about getting a job in a market strategy kind of role in the Food and Beverage sector. Hence, schools good for Marketing jobs would be my preference. Also, I am not very keen on applying in US.

GMAT: 670 [/color](Q - 48, V - 34)
Work Experience: 4.8 years
Academics: 10th: 81.6%, 12th: 74.8%, Graduation: 72.4%

I completed my B.E. in computer science in 2007.

Post this I joined as a software engineer at MindTree Limited. After 3 years of working as an engineer, I got an opportunity to move to the role of a Business Analyst for the Retail vertical group of the same organization. Hence, I have close to 2 years of experience on the consultancy side and with a client-facing role. I also have an international exposure of 4 months in Holland in a project where I had led 6 other members.

I have some leadership experiences to show within and outside work. I was involved in initiatives of corporate social responsibility and talent transformation within my organization and hence have mentored fresh recruits in groups as big as 180 members.

Outside work, I have worked with 2 NGO's, although both not for very long. I was selected and participated in a mega nation-wide entrepreneurial event called The Jagriti Yatra which selects only 400 from around 30000+ applicants.

Currently I am pursuing a Liberal Arts course on full-scholarship. It is launched first time in India in collaboration with University of Pennsylvania. It is called The Young India Fellowship and selects only 100 people from the country to hone their leadership skills through a multi-disciplinary course taught by world's best professors, historians and academicians.
As part of this course, I am interning at a startup venture of Mountain Trail Foods which involves developing marketing strategies for their new outlets.

I have few awards to show during work and also appreciation mails from clients.

I have good recommendations from senior people. I am apprehensive and very under-confident about my score. I have written the GMAT twice but the score fell to 640 the 2nd time hence I am not confident to rewrite it.

What according to you are my chances of getting through INSEAD/HEC/Kellogg? It would be very helpful if you could also specify some good bschools (known esp for marketing) suited for my profile. Also, are IE/IESE good options for me?

I think IE/IESE could be good options and you should have a shot at INSEAD as well. The key is crafting a compelling vision which ties in what you have done in the past to what you want to achieve in marketing/foodservice going forward. Your scores will likely be in the 80% range of all your target schools, so I would recommend going to visit, meeting some faculty and admissions committee members and seeing which schools feel like the best fit.

Hello Team,

Is it a good idea to apply for Jan 2014 intake. I graduated in June 2009.

Profile:

4 years of experience: 3 years with McKinsey in India as Analyst, 1 yr in business development with Halliburton Energy Services (oil and gas) in UK.

Currently based in UK.

Age: 26 yrs
GRE score: 1420/1600 ( Long back I had thought I ll go for MS and had given GRE, the score is still valid)
Nationality : Indian
Education: Computer Science Engineering from one of the top 15 colleges in India but not an IIT.

I am not inclined to go back to consulting and would like to move to a senior BD role in Oil&Gas industry. Quite confused if I should go ahead for January 2014 intake or for July 2014.

Is the GRE score good enough? I know its good for US universities for MS but not sure about its acceptance in MBA courses. Atleast 6 people from my team in McKinsey have already got into INSEAD in last 2 yrs but they went with more experience.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

McKinsey is a great firm so it should be fine with the number of years you have logged there. I think your score should be good enough so long as you apply to schools who will take the GRE instead of the GMAT (more and more are doing so). I don't see why six months more experience would make a difference unless you would be doing something spectacular in those final six months.

Thanks for the reply.

I agree, 6 months wont make much difference but I guess in 6 months I might have more content to write about Oil&Gas experience + some more savings.

Do you know what score they consider good for GRE ? People usually score in the range of 1420-1480 when applying for MS. I can give GMAT if someone can say that this GRE score is bad and reduces my chance of getting in else unnecessarily I would not want to write GMAT.

That should be the equivalent of a 700+ on the GMAT which should be impressive to the adcoms. I assume you had a favorable quant split on the GRE. B-schools like to see a good showing on the quant portion. They are somewhat more flexible on the verbal side.
