MBA profile evaluation

by jcadoret » Tue Aug 21, 2012 7:41 am
Hi!
I'm looking to start an MBA next year and currently working on my applications. My dream school is Yale SOM, but I've been having a hard time figuring out whether top 10 schools are a long shot or not. Here's my profile, let me know what you think!

GMAT April 2012 730 (Q49, V40, overall 96th percentile)
Undergraduate GPA 3.76 from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA
Double major Finance / International Business, graduated Magna Cum Laude + Honors College

I've been working as a financial advisor since graduation in 2010, and specializes in retirement funding strategies and tax diversification. I'm looking to direct my career path towards strategy consulting on the short term, and corporate strategy planning in the long term.

I have interned with Merrill Lynch in college in wealth management marketing, and was a research intern for a local import/export consulting firm.

I'm a regular volunteer at Habitat for Humanity; fervent runner and piano player.
French native, Fluent english, advanced in German

Would Yale SOM, Haas, Fuqua and UVA be accessible?
What about Booth, Columbia or Harvard?

Thank you for your help and advice!

Hi! Thanks for sending in your info.

You have a stellar academic regard, so that will definitely play to your advantage. Professionally, you've got somewhat limited experience, though - two years at the time of application. My sense is that as a financial advisor, you probably have had less opportunity to demonstrate leadership at your company, as your work is very individual in nature (versus working on/leading teams). You'll have a lot of client interaction, but again, sounds like you're advising individual consumers versus big companies or anything like that. So, I'd say professionally, your profile is slightly weaker than that of your peers. Your extracurricular and community work is good, but again, doesn't really demonstrate leadership. It does, however, show that you are engaged in your community and an active individual, which is good!

With all that said, I would say that you definitely have a shot at Yale, Fuqua, UVA. Honestly, I think you could also apply to Booth and Haas as reach schools. My sense is that Harvard and Columbia are less likely given the nature of your professional experience. I'd suggest maybe adding one more safety type school to the mix.

Hope this helps!
