WILL AN MBA HELP?

by VPM » Sat Jun 30, 2012 9:04 am
30yrs M Indian
Educational Background:
CFA (USA): L3 Candidate (Await Results for June 12 exams),
FRM (GARP),
ACA (CPA equivalent in India),
Graduation: Bachelor in Commerce- GPA : 72% (The topper score, I guess 90%)
Work experience:
>8 yrs (inclusive of 3yrs mandatory Internship for ACA program) in Equity Research (Buy side)
Current Work profile -
I'm working as an Off-shore equity research consultant with a London based Hedge fund. I'm a director in the Fund as well.
Last three year the focus was mainly generating investment ideas and saw some of my recommendations finding place in the fund portfolios.
Visited investment conference held in Cape Town and Munich participating/conducting management interviews.
Promotions:
After one year of work with Curr. Emp i was offered directorship in the Fund (2009-12)
I worked with the Curr. Emp for 3 year through a KPO before which they contacted me for a direct work contract.
Promoted to be an "Associate Vice President" in 18 months from a Valuation Analyst at the KPO where I started my work in Equity research (2007-09, Ex-Empr).
Recommendations:
- A Fund manager (a Univ of Bocconi, alumni), who I closely work with can provide me a strong reco.
- A VP at my ex-employer (KPO), is a IIM Kolkata alumni) can provide a strong reco too.
Extracurricular:
Active participation in family business in Micro Financing during School and College days
Responsible for managing family business Financial accounts and Tax compliance
Sports/Activities - Represented School in NCC (like Scouts) 100km Trek camp
Social Activities - Currently visit Govt schools in rural areas to groom graduates for employment and coach them in spoken English and Accounts.
Part of local Toastmaster Clubs: on my way to get "Competent Communicator" certificate
Visiting faculty for CFA L1 (i did some times ago, plan to start again)
Aspirations
I aspire to be a portfolio manager in self-founded Hedge fund in the Long term.
I believe a top MBA will serve as a launch pad to get into leading asset management firms and work more closely than I currently do.
Network/contacts that I build will not only help me get my desired job profile but also help in the long term to build clients base and raise funds for my hedge fund.
YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE:
Will an MBA help me in realising my dream career?
Schools that should consider (if I target GMAT:650-680)?
Suggestions for further enhancement of my profile?

THANKS
VPM

Hi VPM,

First, I think at 30 you should apply to good number of schools so you are not in reapplication mode next season trying to enter at 32.

Second, there is a big difference between a 650 and a 680 in terms of schools you can target. Given your finance aspirations, with a 680 and above (ideally 700) you could target schools like Booth and Columbia, but I think that H/S/W will be too much of a stretch given your profile. You may also want to look at NYU (ideal for finance), UCLA, USC, Darden...

You have some solid extracurriculars and I like the family business story on the side. Perhaps take a course this summer for a grade (get an A- or better) in a new business area and that will give you yet another strong data point.

Hi Alex,
thanks a lot for your appraisal
Could you also pls:-
clarify what is the course you are suggesting for summer targeting a grade of A (I'm based in India)?
list some universities in EU or Asia, which i should target for MBA finance (with lets say GMAT 700)?
Cheers!
Veer
