Profile Evaluation

by kevindstevens » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:25 pm
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if I could get a quick profile evaluation from some of you. I'm not looking to get in to a top flight school like many of you here but would like to get into one of the more well regarded schools in the DFW area.

Academic Profile
BA in Political Science from University of North Texas
2.5 GPA (low I know, however, I have A's and B's in Stats, Calc, and Accounting)
620 expected GMAT (will take on May 25th and have been scoring 600-680)

Work Experience
6 years in retail with 2 years as a store manager and 3 in other management positions (store manager job was for flagship store and took revenue from 700,000 to 1.1 mil in two years)
Promoted 4 times within those 6 years

Moved to an energy company a year ago working in commercial sales
Promoted 3 months in to a pricing analyst position where I currently work

Unique Circumstances
Mother attempted suicide after divorce leaving me to help take care of her and her home while working full time
Worked full time through out my entire college career
Grandmother incapacitated for 2 years leaving me to help care for her

Not sure if I can get into TCU or UTD, would be okay with UNT or UTD too. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hey there,
Well it looks like you have some pretty decent experience as a store manager, and even if your GPA is quite low, it comes with good reasons (which you should be explaining in the optional essay). From what you have here my advise to you would be: Don't settle for anything less than the top of your GMAT range. You are testing 600-680??? Great!!! IF you get less than a 660-670 you should be retaking. Because this is the BEST way to offset your poor GPA and show that you are really serious. You have plenty of time. Until January if need be (for R2). So By then you should be able to get the very top of your range, even if you have to take the test four times.

Good luck to you!!!!

Hi Kevin -

Thanks for sharing your story with us.

I've lived and worked in the Texas MBA admissions market for over 15 years. Personally, I think you are aiming too low in your school selection set.

If you can continue to work hard on your GMAT preparations, you may be able to reach the high end of your range.

If you do, this will certainly put you in line for admission consideration with SMU. TCU is also a fine program in the Dallas market.

Don't forget about UT Dallas. Their programs are growing at a remarkable rate, and they have great things coming in the future.

Remember - you can only do your MBA once. You want to get it from the most competitive school possible. Aim high, Kevin!

Thanks Wendy. Where do you see my profile fitting in? I have an English minor so I am fairly confident my essays will be well written. Say I score in the 640-650 range. Does this give me a chance at UTD, TCU, or SMU? UT's program in Dallas would be great as well but I think I would need closer to 700.
