Dear hector4mba,

Before you spend more time on retaking a GMAT or completing applications, you need to determine if your Executive MBA from IIM is equivalent to the MBA degree at these schools. If it is, then you will not be able to apply as schools will not award a degree to someone who already holds an equivalent degree.

If your EMBA is not equivalent, then you are right to be concerned with your profile for the programs on your list. I think you have a solid academic record, but your GMAT is on the low side. If you have only taken the GMAT once, then I think you should retake it after spending considerable time preparing so you can increase your score (especially on the verbal section). You appear to have some solid work experience with potential examples you can leverage in your applications.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa,

AFAIK, the EMBA from IIM was a certification and would not qualify for a degree or a PG diploma. I'll consider retaking GMAT so that I can improve my score.

On the other hand, what schools, do you thing, can i apply for with this score?

following this post,
I'd like to ask :

I am a Male / Indian / Operations experience of 2.5+ years.. And looking for an Operations / "manufacturing technology & management" full-time MBA program (or a prospective fellowship towards a PhD.) in B-Schools...

I took my Gmat today (Oct, 2008) and got 650 (80%ile).
I have worked in two of the biggest automobile manufacturers of india and have handled projects of substantial responsibilities.

I would like to know if a score of 650 with the given background could get me into good Op. Mngmt courses. After going through the schools' websites, I could not gather information regarding the Gmat cut-offs for these specific courses.

Do you suggest that I should apply nevertheless and hope for the best ?

Dear mtt251289,

I do think you should apply to a program that you feel is the best match for what you seek. However, it is also important to be realistic in your chance of admission at schools. The quickest way to gauge your relative competitiveness is to see how you measure up against the school's average GMAT and GPA. If you are above both of these, then you are competitive. If you are above on one and below on the other, you might still have a chance depending on how far below. If you are below both, then it will be difficult to gain admission.

Having said that, it is only a quick way to gauge where you fall. By no means is the GMAT and GPA the only measures evaluated in the decision. Your work experience, leadership potential, rationale for a MBA, career goals, and strength of your application (i.e., essays, resume, recommendation letters, interview) are equally important and will be critical to the decision you get.

Good luck,
Lisa
