MBA or not?

by bohemian86 » Fri Apr 22, 2011 12:44 pm
Hi,

Just to brief you about myself,

ASL : 24/M/India
Education:
10th = 84%
12th = 81%
B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering)= 6.86/10 (NIT, considered to be a fairly good college)

Work History:
Graduated in 2008 & joined Wipro Tech. as Software Engineer, and then quit after 3 months.
Joined a small company in the field of construction equipment after that. Started with selling the already established breaker to learn some sales & marketing. Now, trying to establish new peoducts in the market for my company. Handling all India. My job now includes the whole process - right from building a team, studying the market, forming JVs, planning the best possible strategy through a positive business plan, managing funds, and the cash flow for this product. Also involved in the direct selling of these equipment. Recently got awarded as the best learner in my company.

Extra curricular:
1). Membership head (that again included sales) for a student's committee in my college.
2). Volunteered in college fests.
1). Play musical instruments - mouth organ & keyboard. Participated in the rock show in my college.
2). Photography (Recently started)

My aim:
To lead an organization and to drive its growth through proper strategy and management. (Although that seems pretty long term one).

Immediate aim:
To enter into the global arena of business environment, learn how to channelize and make best use of resources and use them to cater to the maximum growth of an organization. (please tell me if i'm not clear enough)

My college preference : top 10

Please guide me as to how i can achieve my goals, and how would a global MBA from one of the best college help me.

I haven't yet given my GMAT, but i'm asking this because i want to be sure whether a GMAT (or an MBA )would really help me or it would just be a waste of money.

Thanks,
Shaishav

My bias is obviously toward the value of an MBA. The classroom experience, the networking and the exposure to top companies and faculty all contribute strongly to your development as a skilled and intelligent manager. Your goals are very ambitious and the more tools you can provide yourself with the better your chances.

Top ten schools are very hard to get into. They routinely refuse exceptional applicants simply because of their class size. Remember, these schools turn down 80-90% of their applicants - from exceptionally strong applicant pools. I always advise people who want the value of a forma business education to include safety schools in their target list.

By the way, for additional insights into applying to business school see Ask the Consultants Anything online from Kaplan at 7:00 Eastern time this Monday 4/25. Look for "free events" under GMAT on the Kaplan website. https://www.kaptest.com/enroll/GMAT/6310 ... cid=172619

Hi Shaishav,

MBA will definitely help you as whatever you are planning to achieve cant be done with the conventional route. ( exceptions are always there)

That said MBA program will also help you realize your true potential and field of interest with business. So MBA makes a real sense for you.

As far as top ten schools are concerned you might face a tough time. Though your profile is strong and diverse which not many Indian candidates can offer but still no one can bet. You can try schools in the league of Duke, Cornell, CMU Tepper, Darden, UNC, Ross whether you can make it if you present your profile well in essays and present strong recommendations.

Extra curriculars look average so debate with someone to flesh them out so as to present some other aspects of your profile.

And finally, work on your GMAT & get done with it by August you should apply in R1 or early action cycles to maximize your chances.

Hope that helps
