Profile Evaluation - 710 GMAT - No exp.

by erntsn » Thu Oct 20, 2011 1:24 pm
Hi everyone,

GMAT score - 710 (Q 49, V 38, AWA 5.5) first attempt.
Toefl 101.

Turkish Male, Age 21.

I'm a senior in a top 5 college of Turkey (Middle East Technical University), Business Adm. major focused on finance. GPA: 3.4
Did an exchange in Netherlands for one semester.

-I have no prior work-ex.
-I don't have any shiny extracurriculars as well.
-My goal is to do a PhD after completing a master's programme. Or work as a financial analyst, undecided.

I'm aware that I have a weak profile and a top 50 college would be just a dream. I just want to find out some schools which possibly would accept a profile like mine, if there are any. The thing is; i want to do an MBA,Msc even if i do it at a below-average school, i'd like to do it at the best one i can get accepted.

Thanks for your precious time

Hi erntsn--

There are actually quite a few programs now geared exactly for people in your position. You can look into the Yale Silver Scholars, the IESE Young Talent Program, or the Harvard 2+2 Program -- all will accept applications from college seniors, with specially-structured MBAs that consist of (generally) two years of work experience plus the two-year MBA. The formats of these three programs are all somewhat different but they serve the same type of student.

Other options are, as you have discovered, Master's programs including those at Duke and LBS which only accept students with less than a year of work experience.

So, you actually have plenty of choices. And, your profile is good - you are differentiated due to your geography (there aren't that many applicants from Turkey) and your GMAT and GPA are both solid.

You should go for it! No reason not to. They have designed these new programs exactly for people like you.

Hi Erntsn,

Yes there are some programs like HBS 2+2 as mentioned, but you need to do some research to see if you are really competitive. For example, in the HBS 2+2, they tend to admit very few business majors, as they are trying to attract candidates who have not been on a business track. The GPA and GMAT averages can also be quite high for these special programs, and the applicants have been working on extra curriculars.

I always tell young people to get out and work before making graduate school decisions. Some folks just know they want to get an MBA, but it seems like you are considering a Phd, working in finance....

So my point is there is no rush to apply to an MBA program, particularly if you are not sure about your path, and also given some of these specialty programs are incredibly competitive anyway. If you work for a few years and do some community leadership activities, you will likely have a stronger MBA application as well.

Just came across the Financial Times rankings of Masters of Finance programs specifically for those without work experience - they have a separate ranking for programs where work experience is a requirement.

Here's the link - registration might be required though:
https://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolra ... ience-2011

The top 5 schools listed are:

1. HEC Paris
2. IE
3. Essec
4. Oxford Said
5. Warwick

They also have rankings for other Master's programs, too (Master's Management etc.). The FT lists are obviously global and so they may be more appropriate references for you than BusinessWeek etc. which tend to be more US-focused.

If you're interested in going on to a PhD, then another flavor of Master's beyond MBA would likely be as good, or even better of, a fit. The MBA is usually considered a "terminal" degree, it's business-focused rather than academic. There isn't even a thesis required to graduate with the MBA (that's not the case with most other Master's programs). It's much less common to go on to a PhD after the MBA. So, if PhD is truly your final destination, you may want to map out a more common path to get there, just to make it easier for the future doctoral programs to understand and accept the route that you took. Your best bet would be to start talking to the PhD program people now (you're probably already doing that, but just in case you're not!).

Hope this helps!

A 101 in your TOEFL is low so you might wish to retake that test. Here is one admissions officer's perspective on the TOEFL (https://www.mbaprepadvantage.com/blog/mb ... on-retake/).
