GPA + GMAT

by mba_applicant_2009 » Mon Oct 20, 2008 12:47 pm
Hello,
I have completed my undergraduate studies in Engg. from Mumbai Univ and have an overall % of around 55%. My final year % (on which the class is decided) is 58.7% and 60% is first class/diviision. I would be using the optional essay to explain the same..
Also, my GMAT score is 680..
I have almost 4.5 years of work experience now (with a lot of international experience as well).

Should I be bold enough to apply to top business schools in the US? Do I have a chance?
What worries me the most are my undergraduate marks and have I scored enough in my GMAT to somewhat compensate?

Appreciate your response..

Thank You.

What is a "top business school" to you? And what do you want to do with your MBA?

Best,
Linda

GPA + GMAT

Thank You Linda for the response..
A top business school is a school which would help me achieve my goal of becoming a repputed Money Manager

I think it is important to share my details-

I currently work as a Business Analyst although I started my professional career as a software developer. I have the experience of working in several countries (in US and EUROPE) where I have assumed a variety of responsibilities and leadership roles.
I have worked in many functional domains including Asset Management/ Investment Bankng.
I have done community service for 3-4 months and it's personally been the most satifying and momentous experience of my life.

I want to be a Money Manager. And therefore want to pursue a MBA to achieve my goals (by making a career change).

Now it is imprtant to get into a 2 year program so that I get time to really immerse myself into the Bschool curriculum; the reason being I don't have a formal degree in Finance or Economics.
Ofcourse, I have some background and therefore can explain a transition in the sense that I have acquired good finacial knwoledge while I have been working for the last 4-5 years

"Money/Investment Management" is a field tough to break into especially without any past experience (other than the internship).
So it becomes imperative to study from a good or top school as you may call it.

Would really appreciate if you could guide me.

Regards,
Mannu

GPA + GMAT

Hello Linda,

For the reasons expalined above, I am looking at a school close to the East Coast (US) - Stern/Columbia - which is highly ulikely for me to get into. Rochester and Virginia also fall into my top school category as they have a good MBA finance curriculum but it will be tight
Next I woould be looking at is Boston Univ, which I feel is descent.

According to you, is Canada a good option - Mcgill and West Ontario offer 2 year programs

Please advise.

Regards,
Mannu

Mannu,
Stern and Columbia as well as Darden are unlikely acceptances. You have a competitive profile for Rochester, and that's a good option. You should also consider UNC, UT Austin, and Georgetown.

Linda

Hello Linda,
Thank you for your reply.
I would be considering these schools and applying to some.

Linda, If school is not a highly ranked school (top 15-20), I am looking for schools that have-

1. good finance program/learning options/intense curriculum
2. simulation/practical experience
3. career/job opportunities

For example, 'Georgetown' doesn't really seem to preach what I am looking for (although it is in DC).. It emphasizes more on global/international experience and I am someone who wants learn the subject in detail and make a transition into a new career and not just enhance my education (no doubt that it is a good school)!!.

So can you also suggest me some safe schools (that cover points 1,2 and 3).. I am looking at Carlson and Babson, which is famous for enterprenuership.. But not sure how good these schools are for Finance programs and ofcourse for me!
Do you think any one of the above two schools are good options? Or could you please suggest some more/other options

Greetings,
Mannu

Mannu,

In the past I have seen ads for major banks listing Georgetown as one of the schools it has hired from -- certainly not in the numbers of programs like Columbia and Wharton, but still appearing on the list. That's why I recommended it and the others. In addition, Georgetown has a lot of connections o 3rd world development agencies and international financial institutions. Carlson and Babson teach finance, but I am not sure they are going to help you to transition into banking.

Basically I mentioned the schools I mentioned because I felt you would be competitive at these programs and they would provide 1-3 in your list.

Best,
Linda
