GMAT :: getting into good B-school

Hi Mate,

I am aiming to get into good B-School around the globe.

I have few queries followed as :

1) What should be the Ideal GMAT Score if i want an admission in top50 Global Ranked B-school. (I am aiming around 750)

2) I'll be having 1.5 years of experience when i plan to appear for GMAT and till i complete all the formalities, I'll be having 2 years of work exp before i enter a university.

3) I have scored 70% Aggregate in my graduation in engineering and 85 percent in Under graduation.

4) I am working for a Financial organization for past 1 year in Software Department

5) I have to pursue my MBA in Finance.

6) I am a member of lots of communities as well as i have been a good organizer and have a good pack of things to prove my co-curricular activities.

7) I can arrange to get some good references as well.

Please advice if I qualify to aim for Top 50 B-school and if not, where do i need to Brush Up my skills ?

Also, How is the Working Scope( job permits and Sponsorships) for International students in US, Singapore, France as well as other countries ?

And If we do a Post Graduation MBA from top 50 B schools, Do we have to worry for future career ?

Please Help.. I am in a real fixx !!

Naveen,

1. In terms of an ideal score, the higher the better. A 750 would be an outstanding score.
2. 2 years of work experience is enough for the vast majority of business schools.
3. You want the equivalent of a U.S. 3.4 to 3.6 if you are aiming top 10.
4. Assuming you are Indiana and male, software puts you in a very crowded applicant pool, so you will need to look for ways to stand out.
5. A common post-MBA goal -- finance
6. Schools prefer focused, long-term leadership in extracurriculars over a wide range of varied extracurriculars with no leadership.

Yes, you can certainly get into a top 50 business school. I am not an expert on international work visa policies, sorry.

An MBA from a top 50 school is not a guarantee of employment.

Naveen,

You are targeting the right score by looking at something in the vicinity of 750. Since you are in Indian IT pool, which is very heavily represented, any score less than 700 might be a considered weak.

Average work experience in the top 20 business schools is around 4 years , however, if you are targeting something in top 50, 2 years of work experience might work as well. Having said that, the quality of the work exp is more important that the quantity and you should focus on grabbing the leadership opportunities at work.

Regarding extracurriculars, make substantial impact on selected activities rather than participating in too many activities and spreading yourself too thin across them.

MBA students usually get some time after graduation which allows them to work without needing the work sponsorship. The duration differ by the country. In the US, your OPT stays valid for 1 year period.

Campus recruiting in top 20-30 schools is pretty strong and you might have do some search from your side as well if you are looking at the business school options beyond these schools.
