Profile Evaluation Columbia

by holdnroark » Sat Aug 11, 2012 2:47 am
I am 23 now and will be almost 25 when I matriculate.

I have and undergraduate degree from Columbia in Electrical Engineering (GPA 3.08), which is very good for the program

I am completing a Master's degree from Columbia in Electrical Engineering (GPA 3.7 to 3.8) while working.

I work at a fortune 100 aerospace and defense contractor. After two years as an engineer, I was put in a client facing/management engineering role. (36 months work experience total at matriculation)

GMAT 720 (Q48 V41) Is this score ok? I kind of winged it and did not finish the last two or so math questions. I think I could do better.

Rec: from my Manager and Columbia Business School professor/Alum who was my professor in undergrad

Columbia
NYU
Sloan
Harvard

can you apply to langone and stern at the same time?

Also I have been the caretaker for an ill family member, since the end of undergrad till several months ago

I am looking to change my career and go into finance

Your background is solid, your grades are fine, your GMAT is lovely (don't retake, it's a waste of time). The only thing that makes no sense is your goals. I highly suggest you to reconsider the goals you will present to the AdCom. They have enough Finance people applying with YEARS of experience, it's gonna be hard for you to match them, punch for punch.

Plus you have a specialized Masters already. So are you gonna just throw all that away? I don't think it makes too much sense. Far better would be to propose goals in your industry of either Defense or Aerospace (and EXCELLENT and far more unique industry than "go into finance").

I don't think you can apply to Langone and Stern at the same time, so choose the one you want (I'll assume Stern). And maybe add one or two more schools to your list.

Best!

I would probably like to go into an industry coverage group at a bank and then work my way in to a VC or PE firm, as one cannot generally work at such a firm without previous experience in finance. I own one reltaively sucessful small business and helped a friend start and expand his business. I like to help start and/or turnaround companies - particularly manufacturing. I believe that I have a good backgroung for this, as i have experience working on the shop floor as an enginer and in design and management as an engineer. This is more or less my goal. Though, I guess having the experience I have may make me more unique.

Regardless, Thank you for your advice

That's a very interesting goal. And I agree that you can definitely play on this small business experience to back your argument up a little bit, but keep in mind that selecting your goals is also a part of the STRATEGY. That your goals can and will influence the AdCom's decision regarding your application. And the important thing, whatever goals you ultimately elect to use is that they seem logical, and plausible, and where possible, connected to your past work history (which you can ACTIVELY do in the essays).
