Profile Evaluation

by tejaswini0712 » Wed Dec 04, 2013 6:43 am
Hello,

My profile is as follows:

GPA: 3.66 from a well reputed college in India
Major: B.tech Biotechology.
Work Experience: 2 Years 5 months at Tata Consultancy Services.
And now here comes the problem. I resigned from TCS on Feb 2013 and the reason is as follows.
My mom is a doctor and owns a hospital and had been planning on expanding. So I resigned and took over the responsibilities for the expansion as she couldn't handle both the administration and this.
Since then we have added a Pharmacy, Increased the capacity, Tied up with 2 diagnostic centres and are in talks about opening an obesity centre. But how do I explain this sudden career change and more importantly this is not the field that I intend to continue in and was just helping out my mom.Though this has been a great learning experience, How do I explain this effectively to the adcom and will this affect my chances of admission.
The schools that I intend to apply are,
Ross
Kelley
National Univ of Singapore
Smeal
Scheller
Univ of Illinois-Urbana Champaign.
Any advice will be highly appreciated.
Any suggestions about the school will also be helpful.

Regards,
Tejaswini

I think stating that you transitioned to help out the family business is fine. You are already competitive for all schools, but a higher GMAT score would help for Ross.

There is a big gap between the competitiveness of Ross and the other schools so you might select some more competitive schools at which to apply. Understanding your career goals and where you wish to work post-MBA school would help you determine these programs.

Good luck,

Hi Tejaswini,

Congratulations for scoring 710 in first attempt!!

You are at the right stage of your career with decent academics and GMAT score, you need to spend good amount of time on your applications essays to write about your career changes in 300-500 words is again challenging, requires lot of brainstorming and edits. You should apply to minimum 5-6 b-schools to increase your chances. To add on to the list of schools you can apply to UNC Kenan Flagler, Emory, McCombs, Darden, Tepper. Visit https://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool to measure your chances for top b-schools.
