Profile eval: 740GMAT, WE 4.5yrs in energy

by tobito » Sat Nov 10, 2012 12:28 pm
Profile description: 25yr old female from Delhi, India

- GMAT score: 740 (Q48, V42) - is my low quant score going to hurt me if I want to apply to schools like Wharton, NYU and Haas? (haas specifically talks about looking at quant score on their website, which is making me a bit nervous)
- Undergrad: Econ major from Delhi Univ, India (not so stellar GPA - 1st div)
- Work exp: 4.5 yrs in energy space. Slightly unconventional. first 2 years in an energy consulting firm working on modelling power and fuel markets (pretty analytic and quantitative), currently in a foundation (not for profit) focussed on energy policies - providing assistance to the govt in policy domain. Job involves a lot liaison with intl experts and $$$ of grant portfolio mgt - though I am not the one leading the portfolio.
- Extra currics: Ok during college - debate etc., not much during work.
- A couple of awards and honourable mentions at work.
- Goal: Want to major in strategy and work for a large conglomerate (like a GE, United Tech) in their strategy and product development division after my mba (pretty clear that I do not want to get into consulting and fin).

Will lack of conventional job profile - currently in NGO space - and no major brand names on my CV and not so stellar grades in undergrad hurt my chances? I am considering:
1. one of Wharton/Kellog,
2. Haas
3. Stern
4. INSEAD (Spore)
6. NUS

Also, suggest whether I am missing out any schools that may be suitable for my profile.

GMAT is good takes care of low scores in undergrad if any. Quant wont be a problem, take that fear out of yourself, 48 is just fine.

Why not consider:

1) Rice-Jones: Awesome for energy background people
2) Tepper: Appreciates people with Quant background

NGO space work is cool, adds a positive to your profile, but your short and long term goals need to be very clearly mentioned in your essays, that is what I believe you will be questioned mostly on. They should make a perfect logical sense, given your background and your aspirations.

Allright sir!

Things look pretty good for you, buddy. you are in a very strong industry (one with not enough workers and lots of jobs) and seem to have done some great stuff too (though we need to find out more about your achievements and responsibilities), but overall that is off to a good start. You have an AWESOME GMAT (but you already knew that) which will help you out too. (PS don't worry about quant. you have a 740!!!!! You are awesome!)

I also think you came up with a pretty nice list. Haas with its energy strength and high ranking is a perfect fit, as is INSEAD as a top Euro school with strong industry ties. I second Ivy's recommendations to look into the Texas school (Add McCombs to your list too), as well as Tepper.

Since your main strengths seem to be in your work experience, just focus the majority of your application on that, leaving space for maybe an essay maybe two for something else, to give us a flavor of diversity...

Good luck!
and if you have any follow-up questions, don't hesitate.

Thanks for the support. That solves some of my worries. :)

Haas and INSEAD are two major focus. For Haas, particularly, I can get good LORs from folks PhDs/Masters from Berkeley and currently working with national lab associated with UCB. So fingers crossed for that.

yes, I have been thinking on those lines too, focus being on transition from rigorous narrow focussed energy sector modelling to more broad based public policy work involving strategy, creating linkages in my portfolio, direct interaction with government officials on policy design and liaison with intl and national experts to provide technical support to the government. And on the sidelines, support this with my extra currics in debate and event organizing at college and some bit at work etc.

Thanks. I have figured that my strengths include strategizing, conflict resolution, getting a group together. I can say this from evidence in my current role. Given my strengths, I feel I will be pretty good in any general management role. I am not really sure about the industry, but I feel Skill set that I will hone or acquire at B-school will be applicable in any gen mgt role irrespective of the industry. I am developing my goals around that - obviously, will include some more detail. But does something like this sound vague to the adcom and say that I am not clear what I want to do? Will appreciate your opinion on that. Thanks again.
