Profile Eval - Thank You!!

by oksure » Mon Jan 27, 2014 11:44 am
Thank you for taking the time to evaluate.

Business Schools: HBS (dream school), Booth, Northwestern, Tuck, Wharton (dual Lauder program)

Background:
White male, 27, married

School:
-- BYU - 3.83 GPA (cum laude), Psychology Major, Business Strategy Minor (accepted into competitive Strategy program)
-- GMAT: 730
-- Consulting Club President - 160 members
-- Other small leadership roles - VP of Japanese Association, Director of Student Involvement in Business College as Freshman
-- 4x intramural team captain

Work Experience:
-- (Current) 2 years - Deloitte Consulting S&O - Experience living and working in Tokyo using Japanese in a client leadership setting, used Japanese on other projects with other clients in US. Experience in Tech, Pharma, M&A. Have some leadership experience through local office work, received 2 merit awards and promotion, good project ratings
-- (Intern) 3 months - Boeing - Finance Analyst
-- (Former) - Boutique consulting firm while in school (competitive, leadership positions), small tech company internship
***I'm considering a job change to Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Disney, or other similar F100. Hopefully in some sort of Japanese-speaking or Asia Markets role.

Extra:
-- 50-mile ultramarathon finisher, Boston Marathon finisher -- started out as a 16yr at 240lb and overweight, started running and became addicted. In total 1 ultra marathon, 4 full marathons, 5 half marathons, and various other small races - multiple awards for fast time (e.g. top 1% of division)
-- Eagle Scout - built storage facilities for Ronald McDonald house

Volunteer:
-- 2 year LDS mission to Tokyo, various leadership roles, etc.
-- BYU Strategy Seattle Alumni Chapter Lead
-- Spent 4 months substitute teaching elementary school kids before Deloitte, now a Junior Achievement volunteer instructor teaching personal finance and business classes to kids
-- Have been contributing monthly donations to school for scholarship assistance for the underprivileged since Junior year (2010)
-- Started small non-profit website to help teens find jobs - ran it for 3 years and had a small amount of success, but nothing standout
-- Various other small leadership roles throughout undergrad and LDS church participation

Goal:
I'd like to leverage my Japanese experience to work for a global tech or pharma company in some sort of Japanese speaking role. Either in the US or in Japan. Also open to M/B/B in Tokyo.

As you can tell, I'm still trying to nail down my story and do what I need to do over the next year and a half so I can maximize my chances when I apply. The Japanese angle seems like my best bet, but I'm open to whatever will maximize my chances. I'm really just passionate about getting the best business education in the world.

Hello Paul,

I like your profile dude. Very colorful, very interesting, very strong....
:)

Basically in your profile you are ticking aaaaaaaaall those necessary boxes (awesome GMAT, awesome GPA, good employer) but with bonus points for lots of interesting stuff like your work in Japan, being the consulting company president, Japanese association, and so on.

Your work at Deloitte seems super solid, plus with good leadership experience and awards and so on. But really the thing that makes you stand out most is your work in Japan and in Japanese. A very rare story and rarer even skills. so play that up in your application!

Basically things look fantastic so far. What else can you do? Basically keep things up - get more responsibility, a promotion if you can (change jobs if it is necessary and/or will help). No real mysteries here, just the usual stuff, because you don't really have any big weaknesses, so at this point as long as you are as well as you can in your job + keeping one or two interesting activities on the side, everything else is good to go, and for Top 10 applications.

Hope that helps!
