Should I take the GMAT again

by garima.mimani » Tue Jun 01, 2010 10:01 pm
I am a software developer with 5.7 years of experience. I had taken the GMAT exam thrice earlier in 2007-2008.My highest score is 640 followed by 570 and 560. I tried applying with this score in 2008 but could not get through hence dropped the idea.

Now after gaining more experience I feel the urge to do an MBA again. I am confused whether I should write the GMAT again.
Do the number of attempts decrease the chances of getting through a college? What are my chances of getting in with a score of 640 and 5.7 years experience?

Dear garima.mimani,

It depends on where you are applying and the strength of the rest of your application. Are there MBA programs that would welcome your application and admit a 640 with ~6 years of experience? Absolutely. Would you want to go to these programs or do they offer what you seek? Perhaps. You need to think about what you want from your MBA experience and research programs that will be the best fit. There are many wonderful programs that do not always make the top 30 of a ranking, but will still give you a great education and opportunities.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hey Lisa! I got my degree in Healthcare Management. I graduated 2nd out of 70 graduates (give or take not so sure will try to get an official document from my college) My GPA is 7.79/10, which in your scale translates to 3.11. However, on my final term I had a GPA of 9,75-->3.9 and in my final year as a whole about 3.5. At the same time I was working as a manager and an english teacher, helping my supervising professor with her PhD, playing basketball, learning french, going to the gym and was an active member in a voluntery organization which brings closer EU students. My thesis was uninanimously rated from all three comitee members with 10/10, 2 of them are now general secretaries in the ministry of labour and of health. I have perfect recommandation letters from them but I'm still worried about my GPA. Can a 700+ GMAT score help me attend an Ivy League University for an MBA?

Dear Akis,

Your GPA is strong, but a 700+ GMAT will make you an even more attractive applicant to any MBA program. Additionally, you will need to have some quality work experience, well-written essays, great recommendations, and a good interview. Even if you don't score 700+, if you are close, then you should still consider applying as a strong, overall package is the key for any applicant to be successful for admission purposes.

Good luck,
Lisa

Scores and GMAT link only for a choice of university.....if you are looking at the top 10 then you need to go 700+ else a score of 640 is good enough...giving again may not be the only answer...but trying again on the current score with the higher experience you have now attained would be easier.........there are folks who have landed in places like Urbana Champaign with 640 and more because how their application was drafted....you need to look for appropriate guidance in getting the right application content that can get you through with the score...the university must find your argument persuasive enough to take you in....if required take some external help to know how you can draft your application....
