Low GPA + Moderate GMAT

by alexxasc » Wed Sep 08, 2010 10:12 pm
Hi everyone,

I'm looking to apply to an MBA Program for Fall 2011. After reading through a lot of posts I noticed that the GPA question comes up quite frequently. I know that admissions don't just look at one factor when taking into account the entire application but my question is whether a low GPA will be a complete deal breaker if you have a good amount of experience, a decent GMAT, good essays and great references.

I'm set to take the GMAT at the end of the month and based on my practice tests I think I will score around 650. My undergrad GPA was 2.53 at USC. I have 7 years work experience including 1 year of international work experience at Google, 4 years at BP and a few other fortune 500 companies. I'm not looking to apply to a top 10 school as I know that is completely out of reach but do I have a shot at a top 25 school? I'm looking for a school that has a good alumni network, career prospects so any school recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I wouldn't be so quick to sell myself out of the top ten. THe longer you are out of school, the less your GPA matters, and although that GPA is nothing to brag about, it's from a great marquee school, which will help bolster your qualifications somewhat. Your GMAT is good, and likely falls within the 80% range of many top schools. Your real ace in the hole, though is your WE, which will be more than double of most applicants and higher than many of the accepted candidates. If you can really sell yourself and what you have learned, and you can demonstrate some great career advancement and leadership, you should have a shot at a top school--certainly at a top 25 school at the very least. Good Luck.
