Profile Review Please

by jchemlock » Sun Oct 09, 2011 5:01 pm
Hello. I'm hoping to get some advice on my decision to pursue an MBA. I am currently researching schools and working through the application process. My profile:

27/Male/Chinese-Canadian, Born Raised in Toronto

GMAT, 690 (Q: 42 (59%), V : 42 (95%) AWA 6.0 (91%)
GPA: (waiting for my transcripts; from memory 70%-75%) Honours Arts, Philosophy

Work Experience Since Undergrad

9 Months, Copywriter @ Internet Marketing Firm
3 Years, English Teacher in Japan
3 Months-Present, Admin Specialist @ Manufacturing Branch of a Large Corporation

Languages

English
Cantonese (conversational)
Japanese (conversational)

Extra Curricular

Member of a Canada wide charitable organization, conduct volunteer work for the Toronto Chapter
Actor in short-films submitted for competition
Japanese Language Proficiency Test (N5 94%, N4 83%)

Schools of Interest, Canada

UofT Rotmans
York Shulich
Ryerson Rogers
McGill Desautels
Concordia Molson
UBC Sauder

Everywhere Else (are these realistic?)

HKUST
CEIBS
NUS

I'm aware that I am not a typical MBA applicant. In so far as programs might seek diversity in their classes, I believe this may be one of my strengths.

However in comparing my profile to other MBA applicants I have serious concerns, specifically my (irrelevant?) work experience and my low quant GMAT score. I have an "A" grade in one undergraduate calculus course, but that may be the only other data I have to present my quantitative skills to admissions councils.

Business and general economics fascinate me. I am hoping to develop a career in consulting by leveraging my people skills and international experience. I have not considered any American programs as my intention is to live/work in Canada or Asia - is this a mistake?

Any comments or insights regarding my profile would be greatly appreciated. Happy to answer any questions as well.

Thank you for reading,

JChemlock

JChemlock,
Let's start from the easy stuff. Applying to Bschool programs in Canada and Asia makes sense if that's where you want to work. Because that's where you'll end up, most likely. You could also reasonably apply to Top 20 programs in the US because of the strength of their brand which could reasonably get you a job anywhere, but you also might get "Stuck" in the US. So if that's not what you want, then maybe leave it aside.

As for your profile, it's quite nontraditional, which is not a problem in of itself. Actually it can be an advantage. However, I don't know about your goals. There are more than enough candidates with strong business backgrounds who are going for consulting, and I feel that with your profile you could build a career plan that a)makes more sense and b) is more unique.

As for the quant stuff, its relatively easy to deal with. Firstly, its great that you have that A. You can always point out any other quant experience, plus show them the intention to brush up on your quant by taking courses in the meanwhile.

I feel your profile will ride on how interesting you can make it, plus how good a career goal you can come up with.

The school list you provided is a good one. The first two Asian schools may be a bit of a stretch, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't try

Mr Frank, thank you for your quick response.

My desire is to build a career working in or with the sustainable energy industries. More specifically, I wish to leverage my profile to be in a position to conduct or manage business between Asia/China (leading investor and manufacturer of sustainable energy products) and North America.

Does that still sound dreamy/inconsistent with my profile? My lack of experience in the business world makes it difficult to conceptualize 'unique' career paths.

Thank you again for your time and consideration, it is much appreciated.

Not necessarily too dreamy. Actually once you get in to Bschool, all the paths are wide open, it becomes a discovery and adventure, and if you can get the right contacts and sell yourself you could land that dream job in any industry.

HOWEVER (you knew this was coming didn't you? :) ) what you WRITE the Adcom in your essays should be more or less strategized to what makes sense to give yourself the greatest chances to get in, cause until you do, the adventure remains hypothetical.

There are U.S. schools like Berkeley Haas and Michigan Ross that have strengths in sustainable energy. If you do wish to apply to these programs then I would recommend for you to retake the GMAT and try to obtain a higher score.

Thank you for your reply Mr Cohan. I will look into the programs you mentioned, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to retake the GMAT and still make it for applications this year.

Mr Frank - the adventure and discovery is what I'm after. I can't imagine choosing something now and sticking to it throughout an MBA program considering my lack of knowledge and experience. Is this feeling something I cannot "write" (sell) to Adcoms? Is it possible that I could do it in a very honest (risky) way that might impress them? Please shut me down if I'm talking nonsense right now.

Yes, it is both - somewhere in between.

You want your goals to be sufficiently ambitious (lest otherwise why would you be desirable to a top MBA schools), but able to be accomplished through a logical career plan and the programs that the school offers.

Good luck,

Oops - I edited out a question from my previous post that Mr Cohan responded to,

"Whatever I end up choosing to present to Adcoms, should I be swinging for the fences? Or do I want to keep it more practical and consistent with my profile? Is the answer (it usually is) somewhere in between?"
