IT vs Finance

by lankylint » Fri Jan 11, 2013 5:52 pm
Hello,

I have an undergrad in IT and a postgraduate degree in Economics. I'm an Indian citizen. I am neutral between working in IT vs working in Finance. I enjoy both. However, basic research tells me that "Finance" works better than "IT" for adcoms (especially for Indians). For this reason, I acquired a few finance certifications during the course of my education.

I recently received a job offer to work at KPMG as an IT advisor. The position is based in Hong Kong. I made it clear at the beginning that IT was my last preference. However, they still felt that I should be in IT. Now, my question is, what should I do?

Option A) Accept it.

Option B) Try to get my division changed. (I don't know if this is possible)

Option C) Reject offer. (I doubt many other companies would be willing to sponsor my work visa)

If I choose option C, I will most likely setup a business. However, personally, I have some debts to settle and wanted to hold off on the business until I could settle them.

What option would any of you recommend and why?

EDIT: To make it clear, I do want to do an MBA in the future. I'm currently 21 and want to enroll in the next 4-5 years. I would like to join a top tier school which has a focus on entrepreneurship.

Your intuition that it is easier to into an MBA from Finance as opposed to IT is certainly correct, although plenty of people get in from both. Whether or not you should take the job is another matter altogether, and would depend on your personal financial situation, your other options, the offering of the job, and many other factors about which I know very little. Obviously the firm name is very solid and can carry a long way. I think though that you should perhaps consider choosing your job more on the basis of what interests you on a day to day level rather than the MBA,... because as I mentioned above, plenty of folks get in from either industry, and the most important thing in whatever industry you land in, is to succeed above and beyond...
