- 29 year old white male
-710 GMAT

-3.8 GPA

-BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley

-Poor Work History. I attended college later in life (Age 23-27) due to coming from a low income household I was forced to work after high school (my parents made enough for me to not qualify for meaningful financial aid but not enough to support my education). My first job was at 12 years old washing windows at Texaco. I worked steadily from age 15 until present. After high school I took a job with a fortune 500 company in real estate and worked my way up from entry level researcher to leading a small team in operations (Title insurance company, I worked on consolidating some of the major companies title plants). I worked here for three years before deciding that I wanted to get my education (At age 24 you qualify for financial aid on your own earnings and no longer your parents). I worked another full time job while in my first year of college as a customer service representative and an accounting associate. I worked throughout college as a fine dining waiter. I graduated from UC Berkeley in May of 2011 and began looking for a work in a weak economy. I landed a job at a boutique wealth management firm as a financial planner and worked their for 9 months (until July 2012) before being laid off due to low business and my low experience. I have been working for my friend's company doing sales and marketing for the last 6 months since being laid off. His company is small in size and revenue but the experience has been valuable.

-I was involved in many extra curricular activities in college. I did a one year (400 hour) internship through AmeriCorps (Called JusticeCorps)in the San Francisco Superior Court helping self represented litigants with complex legal matters. I did two years of research under a known professor of sociology at Berkeley (15+ hours per week). I spent 6 months as an at-risk youth mentor and tutor in Oakland. I helped found a non-profit organization in my home town that helps poor people and immigrants find access to legal, medical and food assistance by recruiting professionals for pro-bono. I was an organizer for my college's Social Justice Conference. I also spent a couple years volunteering with the boys and girls club and I am a frequent volunteer at my local soup kitchens (Oakland, CA).

-My goal ideally is to gain a position in consulting for a firm like Mckinsey focusing on government efficiency and effectiveness. Any role in management consulting or strategy interests me. I am also interested in technology consulting (I plan to improve my technical IQ over the next two years)

-29 year old White Male from low SES ( Unique back story, as a child my mother left my family to join a cult, my dad was imprisoned when I was a freshman in high school, family moved around 20+ times and 10+ school changes as child).

-Target Schools: UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, NYU, Columbia, Stretch Stanford

Please let me know what my chances are. I know that my work history is very questionable and so is my age but there are good reasons why. Thank you!

Allright buddy, so there's good stuff and less good stuff in your profile. You have a very good GMAT and great GPA from a strong program. The most difficult thing to deal with is this "getting fired after nine months", and I don't know what exact strategy you need to take to defuse this, but you do need to address this head-on in every application. I think one thing you CAN do though is count your pre-college experience (maybe not the washing windows, but at least the more professional stuff).. they key is in showing PROMISE and potential. You may not have had all the chances you wanted before.. but hey, that's why you want to go to B-school right?

I think that since you have a few safer schools in your list (ECLA, ESC) with a very good and convincing story you could have hopes for admit in at least one school, though if you haven't applied already, you are a bit late in the game, and in that case I would start applying with UCLA, USC and Berkeley, where I think you would have best chances.

Hope this helps you out dude, and you got anything else, you just let me know...

Jon, thank you so much for your response. I have a few more brief questions for you.

I have not yet completed applications to the programs mentioned.

Basically, for a couple reasons including a problem with one of my recommenders I may not be able to complete my application in time for round two deadlines next month. I still think I may be able but in the case that I am not what would you recommend?

1.) Applying to "safer" schools like UCLA USC (or other?) in round 3? I know my chances will be much lower but it would be my last chance for Fall 2013 enrollment.

2.) Apply next year in round 1 (I will be 30 years old 8/2013)with no significant increase in my work/career responsibilities.

3.) Get a better job and work hard for two years, get better recommendations, and apply at age 32? Will my age kill me in the schools ranked between 6-20. This is highly dependent on me landing a solid job with my current set of qualifications.

Any wisdom you are willing to give me on these choices would be very beneficial to me.

Please keep in mind that my essays will be/ are close to being stellar.

Thank you again!

Sure thing,
Well first of all if your recommendation will be late, but will come, you may want to ask the Adcom if that's okay. I've seen them being flexible in such cases before.

Second, either the first or second make sense to me. If it is really advantageous for you to go this year, it might be worth your while even to apply R3. Otherwise applying R1 is an advantage enough that you don't necessarily need a "better job"... the third option doesn't seem to wise, nor like something you could really count on.
