Part-time MBA programs in California

by rohit.bizschool » Sun Jul 22, 2012 10:16 pm
Hello!

I'm considering applying to *part-time* programs (Fall 2013). I took the GMAT a couple months ago and scored 700.
I'm a software professional with 5 years of experience. Post-MBA, I intend to continue working in tech.
My options after graduation:
- Advance into Executive Management and lead teams.
- Product Management (tech)
- Business Development (tech)

I live & work in SF/Bay Area and was considering UC Berkeley(Haas), UCLA (Anderson), USC (Marshall) and Santa Clara University(Leavey)

Haas is my first choice. I understand that it's very competitive to get in.

I'm not sure if it's worth travelling to LA on weekends(for UCLA/USC) or just enroll at local Santa Clara (Leavey) if I get in. I understand the benefits of going to a good school like UCLA (networking, education, brand name, global recognition, etc.).
I'm asking because I don't plan to do a career shift (e.g. finance, consulting, etc.) I know Product Managers and General Managers in my company who have graduated from Leavey and they seem to be doing well (obviously, can't generalize). My concern is that Leavey is ranked very low. In fact, this year, it slipped to #41. Does anyone know why it plummeted? What is the Leavey's reputation among technology companies in the Silicon Valley?

I'm also looking for more information on MBA admission consultants and how exactly a good consultant can assist in the application-preparation process.

Thanks,
Rohit

There's no doubt that going to the best school you can will help you out. Sometimes it's tough, I understand, but in your case I think even if it's a bit of a pain it'd be totally worth it to go to UCLA. Here we are talking about much more than just a number difference int he ranking, but a HUGE difference in prestige. You can succeed as a Leavey graduate, no doubt, and the education will be great, buuuut UCLA is well, UCLA, and Leavey, many people have unfortunately never heard of. Plus, since you really do have a ton of transport options from Bay area to LA (even if its a royal pain), it's not THAT hard so as to make it impossible.

Sooo, here, I would say, go to the best school you can. Of course if you get into Haas, it will solve all your problems!

Thanks for your reply Jon.

After reading several responses, I'm convinced that flying to LA every weekend for Anderson (if I get in) would be a wise thing.

In your experience, have you come across many applicants/students who fly to Kellogg/Chicago every weekend from the West Coast for part-time MBA?

Hmm I've never heard of that, and I'm not all that sure how doable it is (I guess it depends on how "portable" your job is, and how "supportable" your significant other is (oh man bad joke alert!) ) but you should ask around. Best place to start is the ADCom office, they can hook you up with people who might have done that.
