Please Evaluate My Profile

Profile: 28 year old white male from Vancouver, Canada

Work Experience: 6 years at a Higher Education company in a variety of roles. Originally hired as a sales rep, I was then promoted to a Digital Solutions Manager where my main focuses are presenting to committees and creating/implementing internal projects (rep training, digital strategy etc.) In addition to being a Digital Solutions Manager I am currently a Custom Editor as well. In this role I help manage a database and have gained experience working with contracts and tight timelines. I have also completed a marketing & editorial internship with my company and I have hit my sales target every year.

GMAT: 690 (Q44, V40)

College info: Simon Fraser University. 3.67 GPA, Psychology major.

Extra-curriculars: Volunteered in the Social Psychology Lab as a research assistant for three years, tutored psych statistics at the University level, volunteered with the annual departmental open house, active in a variety of sports leagues

Target programs: UBC, Queens University, University of Washington, UC Irvine. Stretch - USC!, Cornell

Post-MBA goal: I would like to transition marketing, specifically brand management.

Coming from a social sciences background in University and a sales background in my career I am unsure of which schools to apply to as I do not have a typical MBA-student profile. Any advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, Canada is under-represented in the US at the MBA level, so you could potentially stand out from a cultural perspective. Your GMAT is good, and will be well within the 80% range for all your schools. Make sure you have compelling reasons for why you are choosing each one. I would add Kellogg to your list if your focus is marketing post MBA. Psychology is actually a great prep for b-school, marketing in particular, so don't think your background is a disadvantage--pitch it as unique and valuable to your classmates because of your alternative perspective. I like that you have been promoted at work--not sure I see a ton of leadership, so you may want to think on how you have made an impact whether or not you have been in charge. hope this helps.

Thanks for the excellent feedback, Bryant. I will definitely take a closer look at Kellogg.

Ideally, I would prefer to stay on the West Coast. Do you have any suggestions for programs on the West Coast with strong marketing specializations?

Santa Clara and Anderson are not on your list---you might investigate them. Also Pepperdine has a good program.
