Profile Evaluation Please

by MBAforME? » Mon Jul 14, 2008 7:49 am
Hello,

US Male, 26 yrs old.
GMAT: 720
Graduated with BBA in Finance from a pretty good state school with 3.10 GPA.
Work Experience: Bank examiner with the FDIC for 3 years. My duties primarily focused in the Capital Markets area. Just recently accepted an analyst position with a large bank.
Extracurriculars: Not much really, don't have too much free time.
Other: Just took CFA Level 2 exam this past June.

My main concern is my relativley low GPA. Would progressing through the CFA program before I enter the MBA program help mitigate any concerns over my GPA?

My top 2 target schools are The University of Texas at Austin and Southern Methodist University. I might apply to a couple of top 10 schools just to see what happens.

Do I have a realisitic shot at my top 2 choices?

Thanks!

Dear MBAforME,

Your 720 does help to demonstrate your academic aptitude, so that will mitigate your GPA quite a bit. Passing part (or all) of the CFA will also show your ability to grasp financial concepts. I think SMU will be interested in your profile, and I think you have the foundation for a competitive application to UT-Austin. You just need to put together an overall strong application and make a personal connection with the admissions staff at those schools.

Best of luck,
Lisa
