Hello,
I'm taking the GMAT in one month and am hoping someone can briefly evaluate my profile to let me know where I stand thus far, how confident or scared I should be:
1st practice test GMAT 520 (last month, raw)
2nd practice test GMAT 580 (studied for 4 weeks)
3rd practice test GMAT TBD (taking this weekend)
Acads:
GPA - 3.0 (Vanderbilt University - Human & Organizational Development Major)
Degree (NYU - Continuing Studies in Advertising & Event Marketing)
Work - 8 years total
- 2 years working for global Japanese printing & design company: Sales manager for west coast, Canada and South America. Increased sales over 10% every year, brought in new accounts. Managed $13M/yr. Bi-lingual (Spanish) and created new partnerships with Mexican companies in less than a year
- 6 years working now for Experiential Marketing Agency: Account Manager for Honda/Acura, principally a brand image consultant that produces 80 events/year, manage $30M/yr, oversee multiple departments in producing live promotional events integrating social media, interactive engagements, and tactile experiences to target audiences. Promoted twice in last three years. Youngest manager my age (31) at company.
Extra Curricular, Hobbies and Interests
- Volunteer with VOLA (Veterans of LA) on skid row, help them learn computer skills and draft resumes so they can apply for jobs and move out of the shelter
- I make and sell home-made ice cream. Now partnering with a boutique dessert truck to expand his offerings and further develop my brand in socal
- Assistant Coach for little league baseball team (8 - 10yr olds)
- Play fast-pitch baseball in adult wood-bat baseball league sundays (when not traveling for work)
- Play guitar & piano. Fill in guitarist for friend's band in Long Beach
- Travel often, recently completed the 4-day Inca Trail hike in 3 days
Post MBA Objective
I want to work with either emerging brands, developing their image and targeting their marketing campaign to reach new audiences not exclusively garnered from print or tv anymore, and use my experience creating and delivering events to capture audience attention and push a brand forward in the public eye. Or, work with an existing brand that is doing this well (Warby Parker, Toms, etc.) and continue to push the envelope of what successful marketing can be and really own a brand (from logo, to theme, to mission statement, to employee lifestyle, etc.)
to work in Strategy Consulting, providing solutions to CEO level problems, for which an MBA would broaden my perspective and provide the necessary skill sets.
Also, would like to use the knowledge and experience gained in the MBA program and in the Consulting career to be in a position where I can sucessfully start something on my own at some point in the not too distant future.
Concerns
1. I want to start school next fall. I am going to apply by end of year to be considered with the first two admissions pools at my target schools and my GMAT is not where it needs to be. 700 is my benchmark, but if I fall short of that where does my application stand given my fairly unique (vs other mba applicants) work experience, college major, and post-mba goals?
I am targeting California schools because I want to stay in-state post graduation:
UCLA (top choice)
Berkeley
USC
Stanford (it's a long shot, but why not)
Please evaluate my profile and give it to me straight, but soften the blow if bad news is inevitable. Let me know what's missing from my profile to get me into one of those schools and what GMAT score will make me feel more comfortable when applying.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I apologize for any grammatical errors, rash of undercase letters or train-of-thought sentence styling.
- M
