Hi,

This is Amit (29yrs) from Bangalore, India. I am working with one of the top 3 US IT MNCs in Sales and Marketing role. I have 3 years of workex after my 1st MBA ( which I did from one of the well known B Schools in India in Marketing and Finance) in business development and currently I am into WW Product Marketing role with the same IT company. Before my 1st MBA , I worked with an MNC bank in their loan division (Sales) and also was involved with an NGO for 1 year.

I want to do a second MBA from one of the top 10 US BSchools in the next 2/3 years. Post that, I want to move into VC/LBO firms in the short term .
Please let me know how to prepare in the next 2/3 years in order to get into the top programs. Will joining a start up in Product Marketing role AND doing CFA programs in the next 2/3 years help me in this respect ?

Please advice.

Thanks and Regards,
Amit

Hello, Amit,

Keep in mind that to be competitive for top MBA programs (US or global), you need to show outstanding career advancement. So I suggest pursuing a role that will meet your growth needs AND enable you to expand your scope of responsibilities and leadership while having a clear impact. Breadth is fine, but the top programs want to see advancement - someone who pulls away from the pack. If you determine that the startup position will do this, then great. Of course, the CFA would be a plus.

Also keep in mind that MBA programs respond differently to prior MBAs; you might want to get a sense beforehand of how your programs of interest view this point.

Hi Cindy,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I was waiting for it eagerly. So, thanks a ton.

In my current company, advancement seems a bit difficult (in terms of vertical growth) because of the nature of the job and its huge size (being one of the largest IT companies in the world). I have seen my colleagues in the same profile for the past 5/6 years before they actually got a promotion in terms of larger resposibility /larger scope of work (vertical growth). But at the same time , my company gives me flexibility to gain knowledge across different products/functions ( I have done two different product specialist roles and two different fucntions ).

Are you advicing that vertical growth is more important than horizontal growth for a candidate willing to get into top 10 US BSchools? If it is so, then moving to a startup makes sense because it gives me both minus a brand value .

Also, since I am already 29, how would i be perceived by top B Schools in terms of right fit ?

Please advice.

Thanks and Regards,
Amit Saha

Hi, Amit,

While horizontal growth is good to show in the application, if you don't have a lot of formal opportunities to show vertical advancement, you still should try to clarify that you have not just grown but advanced -- i.e., maybe by higher profile projects, leading teams of peers, etc.

Regarding the age -- it will be an issue for some schools more than others. For some schools it will be ok -- I suggest looking at the average ages of the schools of interest and seeing where you're more of an age fit.
