How to show MS fits with MBA

by sandeepg » Thu Oct 27, 2011 6:29 am
Hi I need some advice on profile evaluation and advice as to how to make sure that my MS is not a negative point.

Profile
Age: 28 year
B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, GPA 3.7, 2005
M.S. in ECE from Carnegie Mellon University, GPA 3.86, 2007
WE: ~2.5 years with Intel Corporation, USA as Design Engineer
WE2: ~1.5 years with Intel Corporation, USA as Micro-architecture Engineer
GMAT: 750 (51Q, 40V)
Volunteering: Volunteer in almost all the corporate events . Also volunteered in India teaching kids preparing for various engineering entrance exams

Leadership:
Nodal person for keeping track of various metrics and completion for half of chip in my last project. (Intel)
Member of Senate Student Benefit fund, Senate Scholarship Committee (IIT)
Member of EE Department Committee (IIT) which deals with various student and faculty issues. Also involved in developing new curriculum for students starting 2011.
Co-head of the Student Book Club

Looking to apply to Harvard, Booth, and Wharton

Problem: How to show that MS is not a negative on my application and how does it fit with MBA goals.
Don't have many leadership activities due to the nature of my work.. more focus on group responsibility
Almost nil volunteering outside work..

I do not have enough information to advise you because I do not know your goals. On the surface, your working for Intel seems to align with an Engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon. Also, as a high-level point, MBA schools know that foreigners are sometimes under-employed for their qualifications upon moving to the U.S. (given restrictions of H1B or other work visas). So, an exact alignment might not be as necessary.

Good luck,

Your MS isn't a negative point. On the contrary it's a positive one. With the caveat that your stated goals are planning to build on them. So you have the tech stuff, the basics, and now you want the career jump. This is totally reasonable and normal.
