by joinashish » Tue May 08, 2012 7:15 am
Hi Brian,

I would be very grateful if u will evaluate my profile for 2013 fall schools.

I am 31 year married Indian. I have approx. 8 years of experience ( 1.6 years in telecom and 6.2 years in oil & gas sector). Presently working as an Assistant manager with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited ( a fortune 500 company) and posted in E&P department. I am in management cadre and handling projects with a handsome experience in managing consultants, contractors, vendors, statutory authorities and workmen.

GMAT score: 710 ( Q=50; V=35, AWA 4.5 )
Toefl: 97
Class-X: 85.4% from C.B.S.E.
Class-XII: 77% from C.B.S.E.
Degree: B.Tech (Electronics Engg.)
College: KNIT Sultanpur ( a state govt. college)
Year of graduation: 2004
Percentage: 71% (ranked 7 out of a competitive class of 60)

Current Employment(2006-present): Bharat Petroleum Corporation limited (a govt. enterprise and a Fortune 500 Company) as an Assistant Manager.
Experience: Oil & gas Sector-Cross country pipeline projects encompassing designing, tendering, planning, engineering, and site execution, liasioning with statutory authorities.

Past Employment Shyam telelink Limited( now MTS)(2004-2006)
Experience: (Telecom service provider) Worked as a node incharge, handled the customers complaints & new connections, led the 6 members technical staff.

I like to continue in oil & gas sector but with a broader role. Post MBA, I want to join consultancy firm so that I would have better understanding of different functions of energy sector and would interact with different industries. My long term goal is to achieve the role where I may take strategic decisions for the businesses and the organisations of energy sector.

I am planning for: Duke, McCombs,Rice, Mays, Arizona State university, rotman and Ivey.

I know my score in verbal and toefl is poor. I like to retake Toefl but not sure how badly will it effect my chances in B-schools.

Hey there and thanks for posting!
The school list you have provided is a good one and make sense given your goals and industry. You should definitely retake the TOEFL, aiming for a 107+ if possible. But you are a lucky guy, cause it's a better test to retake than the GMAT! :)

I think that given your profile and age, the thing that will most convince me that an MBA is for you is if you can SHOW in as concrete a way as possible that a high level leadership role (i.e. CEO) is 'guaranteed' for you, if you can only get this MBA you need. You can do so, by showing constant advancement and improvement, especially in terms of leadership (i.e. leading more and more people and bigger and bigger projects, and having more and more responsibilities).
