Profile evaluation request - GMAT 680

by TMBA » Wed Jan 29, 2014 3:15 pm
Hello, I would like a profile evaluation from an expert. I am an Asian female, 24 years old.

Education: B.S. Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Tech, 3.53/4.00 GPA (high honors)
Work experience: 7 months at JP Morgan as a Wealth Management Analyst, 2 years at IBM and just got promoted to Senior Strategy Consultant (still working at IBM)
Extracurricular activities: Middle School Mentor at Apex for Youth, held several mentoring positions within IBM, Community Service Board member at IBM NYC office
GMAT: 680 (Q46, V37), Quant 68%, Verbal 82%, 4.5 on writing and 7 on IR

I want to specialize in Strategy when I get my MBA because my end goal is to go to Corporate Strategy.

I am looking to apply to Columbia for Early Decision this fall, and also considering NYU and Fuqua. Open to other schools as well.

Do I have a shot at any of those schools? Should I retake the GMAT or focus my time on performing well at my new position so that I can get stronger recommendations?

Thank you!!!

Hi,

You have good profile with decent GMAT score and work experience. If you are looking at corporate strategy as your post MBA career goal then you can also consider applying to b-schools like Harvard, Stanford, Ross, Tuck, Kellogg and Ohio Fisher. These b-schools come under top 10 for corporate strategy. Columbia will be highly ambitious b-school for you considering the range of GMAT score is between 680-760, unless you really work hard on your essays/recos. Duke and NYU stern you have realistic chance. So focus and give time to your application.

Your profile seems quite good. I'd say if you can get a higher GMAT is the single most important thing. The difference between a 680 and 720 is one of order. And if you can do it, it will change your chances more than anything else.

Go Jackets! Jon's right - it really is a significant difference. You went to a great school, you have the demonstrated ability to handle academic rigor, and, with the right GMAT score, your academic profile can be a differentiator for you.

Also, most of the top ranked strategy firms will want to know your GMAT score. Being able to lead with a 720 versus a 680 will make a big difference. Getting those jobs is more competitive than getting into the school itself!

So I'd agree - retake it and definitely get over that 700 mark by as much as possible. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
