Unique Admissions Situation - 700 GMAT

by MR2015 » Thu Oct 25, 2012 1:18 pm
I'm looking for a little advice on the admissions process. I have a unique story, so here's little bit about my background.

I graduated with a degree in Musical Theatre Performance, and after attempting a career in acting, I have turned to the hospitality management field. I'm looking to get an MBA in order to transition to a career in hospitality marketing. Here are my stats...

700 GMAT (46Q, 40V)
3.1 GPA
3.5 yrs work experience in hospitality management

I've applied to Ross, McCombs, Anderson, and Marshall all in round 1. Should I consider widening my scope and apply to more programs in round 2? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi MR2015,

What a fantastic profile. I think non-traditional candidates can have a leg up in the admissions process. Not only is your application pool small as compared with others such as those in banking and consulting, but you also have a chance to demonstrate why your experiences uniquely qualify you to attend bschool. The challenge will obviously be to find ways to fit in since you will already stand out quite a bit.

It's not quite clear if you are currently working in the hospitality field or if you are looking to use the MBA to join the industry. Either way, you'll want to demonstrate a genuine interest in the field as well as concrete short and long term goals. The adcom might initial question your need for an MBA thinking that a degree in hospitality or hotel management might make more sense. Be sure they can't poke holes in your story and you'll be in good shape.

Please feel free to send your resume to [email protected] to receive a free detailed assessment.

Best,

Stacey
