ESCP Europe - 50 % scholarship - worth it ?

by joebus » Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:48 am
Hi ,
I hope you can help me with a crucial decision regarding MIM.

I have recently recieved a 50 % merit award from escp europe for their masters in management program.
Since the beginning i was highly inclined towards the french schools which feature in the top slots in the rankings, however recently i have had doubts about taking up a min. 3 year option for a masters.
I know about escp's brand name. the only hitch is -

1) How much do you think the language will play a role in career search ( French ) ?

2) In the long run, do you think it is really worth spending 3 years ( 2 yeards academic + 1 year compulsory internship ) on a Masters degree and NOT an MBA ?

3) Does anyone have any concrete information about the school's career services, placements- sector wise. avg salary quoted in the web site is decent, but anyone with anything more ?

3) any other top 1 year programs u suggest , apart from LBS/LSE ?

I mean I will be 25- 26 when I start to earn full time.

thanks for your help

joebus

Dear joebus,

You are right to ask these questions, as you need to go into this with realistic expectations. You must have thought about all of these issues prior to applying, so take a step back for a minute and think about why you felt the MiM at ECSP was the right program for you. It is a big investment of time and money, but any graduate business program is. As for your questions:

1) Speaking the language of the country where you want to work is always critical, but being fluent (speaking/writing/reading) is imperative to be successful professionally. While many global companies have native English speakers, you do need to think about where career prospects will be for you and how those companies operate (primarily in English? in French? in Spanish?). From ECSP, how likely is it you would secure employment in other parts of the EU?

2) Whether the MiM is worth it for you is only a question you can answer. It is a similar degree, but not the same as an MBA. You need to assess your career from a long-term perspective to gauge which graduate degree program is the right choice. You must have thought the MiM was right to now be evaluating an admissions offer...don't let "cold feet" get in the way of a realistic assessment of the right path.

3) Schools control what placement statistics are out there, so what you see on a school's website is probably the most information you will find around career services. If you have specific questions on industry relationships or the like, perhaps you should call and speak with the career office directly? Most schools are open to admitted candidates talking with career services professionals.

3 (again) There are many good 1 year programs in the EU and UK. The US has a few, but many require a bachelor's degree in business (or significant coursework). However, not all programs are right for you, so you want to make sure you are targeting the ones that make sense for your career goals.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi there, as European, here's my take on your questions:

1) If you want to work in France, french is absolutely essential. This is true of any European country, but for France especially so.

2) Depends on you. If your profile is already strong then 3 years is overkill. If however you feel like you could improve significantly (perhaps you have low GPA/GMAT/poor extracurriculars/no internships) then 3 years master will give you all the time to strenghten your CV and get into the workforce in top shape and ready for top tier companies.

3) There's some info in the FT rankings, but the website is your best bet.

4) have a look at the FT rankings there are a bunch of programs :)

Cheers.
