Suggestions for shortlisting b schools

by embeeay » Tue Sep 27, 2011 4:19 am
Hi,

Following are my credentials:

Age 23, Female
GMAT : 700 (awa 6.0)
Work ex: 2 years 4 months as of now
Undergrad : 8.4/10 cgpa
10th and 12th - 92.3 and 95
Extra curriculars are just average, the usual inter school, inter college events.

I am targetting the following schools:

NUS, ISB, Univ of Michigan (Ross), Duke(Fuqua) and UCLA (my dream school but am not sure if I have a chance here)

Please let me know if I am applying to schools beyond my reach and if yes, then please suggest schools where I have a realistic chance.

Your profile is very good and now you live in the times when you will be welcomed by one of the best colleges, despite the lesser amount of Work Ex.

You missed HBS 2+2. Oh yes, you can.

All the colleges you mentioned are within your reach. I believe you have an IT background and will have themed your essay for uniqueness. The experience group you mentioned is quiet competitive but you are among the better one's among them to catch the bus.

Tell us more about your EC's. Before submitting your application, get some experts review them.

Best of Luck

Thank you so much for the reply.

My EC's - am trained in two forms of classical dance. Participated in several dance competitions etc. I have quite a few significant prizes in literary events. I wrote for a local news website for a while. Was part of the student life committee in college.

This is the area where I feel I am falling short but there isn't much I can do about that now except for highlight my achievements. I wanted some advice regarding applying for some colleges in Canada, like Rottman etc just to keep more options since US b-schools like you said are very competitive.

Hey!
Don't sell yourself short!
You have a nice profile, and good numbers. The school list you have proposed is actually a quite reasonable one. Depending on what your goals are you might add a school or two like: Babson, Olin, Kenan-Flagler. Your stats are good. So aim for as high as you can go.

Thanks for the quick reply. Ya, modesty is not going to help me too much when applying for b-schools :).

I wanted some advice regarding the specialization during mba. I have an IT/Gaming background right now. I was quite keen on not continuing in the same domain post mba but am not totally against it either. Although, a career in entertainment/media is my ultimate goal. Hence, UCLA was a top option. Are there any other colleges which have a name in terms of career options in the entertainment industry.

USC, McCombs, NYU, Columbia, Boston University all have great Film/Media/Journalism Programs. Being in Cali or NY is basically a MUST for the entertainment industry, and many of these schools offer various double degrees if you are interested.

You cant decide whether you will become the assistant director of Jay Leno show or a funding specialist for the next big reality hit.

One thing you can do is to be near Hollywood, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Chicago etc. Its mandatory because in media industry the doers are nearby.

Stern makes a lot of noise.
