2nd MBA worth it ?

by mathewtvm » Wed Mar 06, 2013 6:21 am
Dear Friends ,
Just wanted to know whether it is worth doing 2nd MBA based on my profile ?

Background
Working in world's largest Agricultural Supply Chain company as a Sr Executive.
Area of focus:- Private Label Spices. (Key accounts management and Project Management )
Has a good international exposure and also gets involved in high level decision making.
Total yrs of experience :- 5yrs

Education
PMP :- Project Management Professional Holder from PMI
PGDM:- 2.94 CGPA ( Approx 70%) Specialization :- Marketing and Systems Operations (Dual ). Tier 2 Bschool
B.Com:- 60%

I really consider my current work experience as an eye opener. It has given me a better perspective of the world of business. Also my specialization in the field of Private Label is an upcoming category which I could boast off. To get a good perspective of world of finance I have enrolled ICWAI ( Postal education ). To scale up the ladder and to be involved in a leadership role I was thinking of doing a 2nd MBA from a premier Bschool. All my managers are from top tier Bschool. I am proud to be associated with them, But it will take more than another 8-9 yrs to get a leadership role like what they are holding.

I don't have much to boast off, Academically also I am average. Do you think it's worth pursuing a 2nd MBA based on my background.

My first preference would be ISB

Hi Mathewtvm,

This is a tough question. Often times people pursue 2nd MBAs to get global business exposure, but it sounds like you've gotten incredible exposure from your current role. Supply chain management is a hot field and would be an asset to a business school applicant, so you would have a shot, but not necessarily at a top 10 program. Unfortunately, there's no black and white answer that I can give you - it's a very personal decision and I think you should weigh your opportunity costs, potential benefits, risks, etc. before you decide one way or the other. Think about what skills you'd really develop from a premier MBA program, how you'd apply them, where they'd get you...you might also discuss with your managers and see what they think, as they have been down that path themselves and it sounds like you aspire to one day be in their shoes.

Sorry not to be more helpful! Good luck!
Mili
