Hi I am a 29 year old from India. Before even you guess, I will tell that I have spent about 7 years in the IT industry.
Before even you develop a bais, I would like to share a few life changing experiences.

10 years back when I was in Engineering, I voluntarily joined the "National Cadet Corps" which is part of the Indian military cadet corps,
An organisation comprising the Army, Navy & Air Force, engaged in grooming the youth - 'The Leaders of Tomorrow' - into disciplined citizens.
https://nccindia.nic.in/glory.htm
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_C ... 28India%29
I was a part of it for the 3 years of my graduation, I know how I jiggled the two very demanding courses, one mentally and the other physically.

My First question, will colleges which are known to be military friendly recognize international part-time military experience, which is about 10-7 years old ?
( https://www.mba.com/mba/whybschool/milit ... chools.htm )

Unfortunately the very year I joined the forces within a few months, my county Gujarat faced one of the worst Earthquakes in last 100 years.
( killing 20,000 people and leaving an unfillable void behind https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/2059330.stm)
As a part of this force, I showed exemplary leadership and great skill and rescue and rehabilitaion work.
I lost my father to cancer within a month of the earthquake, and despite this deep personal loss, I kept running from pillar to post to align food, water, medicines & shelter for the victims. It was this phase in life which changed my from a boy to a man, taking strong, honest and decisive decisions. It changed my outlook towards life, work, money, rather everything!!

My Second question, Althought I am definitely going to keep this personal experience in essays of each B-school I apply, should I add the military experience in my CV?

I was given a special note of appreciation then (in 2001) by a NGO in Gujarati language.
My Third question, should I include it as a part of the package of certificates? should I get the certificate translated in English?
If yes then should the translations be certified by certain authority, or perhaps try and get in touch with the NGO again?

The military experience truly helped me organize things better, connect with people and work with a purpose, put in disciplined effort, explore uncharted territory etc. and thus helped me climb up the organizational ladder quickly.(I was the youngest person in my peers to be given an onsite opportunity, youngest module lead and youngest team lead, given an early promotion etc.).

My Fourth question, should I mention that this military experience actually helped me achieve all this? Would it not seem that I am going too overboard with something which happened years back? I would not like to be misunderstood or sound boastful.

I have not been actively involved in any social cuases except for blood donation and off late working on something which I believe in. https://twitter.com/skiponemeal & https://www.skiponemeal.org
Although my profile might look good for somebody interested in a Not-For-Profit , I worked with the TATA group and I believe in many facets of life and believe in pioneering in technology, working hard & earning and also in giving it back.

My fifth and final question, should I mention about the websites I am making ( in the essay or c.v. ? )or other causes?
In the short span of the essays I might not be able to justify my interests in International Business,Finance & Entrepreneurship.

My apologies for the tardy response.

You definitely want to include your military experience and volunteer work at the time of the earthquake somewhere in your application. However, it was eight or more years ago and you don't want to appear as if you haven't done anything significant since.

Yes. The military experience should be on your CV. All colleges will "recognize" the military experience. However, they will be looking more closely at what you have done lately.

Regarding the certificate, that is a cost question. If it's cheap, sure. If it's expensive, I'm not sure it pays.

If you are going to discuss your military experience, you should discuss its impact on you, specifically how it has made you a better leader and manager.

It's hard to say without knowing what you might have to leave out, but you probably should write about the websites if they are a significant commitment in your life, relate to your post-MBA goals, or have had a significant impact.

Best,
Linda

Thanks a lot Linda for your clear reply.

I get all the points what you say.

I think I need to introspect a bit more whether this website would be a significant commitment.

Nishant
