GMAT Score:700
Old question but New Way.

Hello All, I took my 4th attempt at GMAT and scored 700 (Q48 78 or 82 percentile, V38 84 percentile - Total 90 percentile). I am bit disappointed with my Verbal score. I was hoping to score 42+. I have a BS in Mechanical Engg from a state school in India with 3.28/4.0 GPA and I started my own special purpose machining business in India. I did that for around a year and then merged it with my father's business and set out to get my Masters. I got my masters from University of Texas-Arlington in Aerospace Engg (3.2/4.0). During this time I was recipient of Dean's Fellowship for 4 consecutive semesters and also GTA and GRA. When I was in grad school I also took some advanced Mathematical Modeling classes with A in everyone of them and a graduate level class in Macro and Micro economics with scoring B. After that I have been working as a Product Design Engineer with Ingersoll Rand. I will have total 5+ years of work ex by the time I will start my MBA. And yes I will be 29 when I will start my MBA.

I am planning on applying to Stanford GSB, Haas, MIT-Sloan, Booth for social for profit entrepreneurship. I know my chances are pretty slim at all those schools but I don't want to get an MBA just for the sake of getting an MBA. That is why I visited all the schools on the list and made sure that I am willing to spend time and energy. SO that is the reason I don't have a "safety school". I am still debating Ross and Yale but regardless they will be R2 game if I decide to apply.
Also, I have been working with local charter schools for more than a year with curriculum planning and other activities. I might be in the governing committee of that school starting this year. Started a co-ed soccer league for the international community in small midwest town so that they can meet locals and make friends. My rec will be good to excellent.

So yeah, back to the original question. What do you guys think about my GMAT? Should I retake? Because I have been consistently scoring 730+ in all my practice test. Remember this was my 4th attempt. Given the history of strong quant background from my undergrad and grad school work, does it really make sense to spend $250 and few more weeks on 5th attempt?

Uh... hmm. After just gushing at you in an over-the-top ridiculous way, now we see that you're wondering about taking this darn test again.

If you're asking us -- oh I guess you are! We would not. :-)

Three times is plenty - four times is the charm in your case.

You've proven what you need to prove with this test: That you can handle the material.

High GMAT scores don't get you into the great schools - it's all the other stuff. It's the essays (oh did someone say essays??) and the recs and how your background is presented in your resume and... It's the other stuff.

You've met the bar with this score, your quant and verbal are balanced, you're good to go.

It's all those other things about charter schools and soccer leagues and whatever else is up your sleeve that you need to focus on now - in presenting that material in a way that doesn't make the adcom barf. Err, sorry no - that makes them sit up and smile!!

Best use of resources in our snarky opinion is on essays now. You need to go Rd 1 and those essays will take you MUCH longer than you expect.

Haas and MIT care about the quant side but it sounds like you've had some good quant-heavy education in the recent past -- aerospace engineering is no joke -- so you've established your abilities, we think. At this point, trying for a higher GMAT is unlikely to do much for you except be a distraction.

EssaySnark

PS: This advice is true regardless of what candidate pool anyone may be a part of, though obviously with someone from the standard "Indian male IT engineer" cohort as you are, then yes, a higher GMAT always helps, as a very rough rule of thumb. But not necessarily after 4 tests, and not with deadlines peeking over the horizon as they are. Rd 1 > higher GMAT, in our opinion.

PS #2: Ross and Yale are not "safety schools" - not sure if you meant to imply that they are or not. Just settin' the record straight on that. :-)

EssaySnark,

I am quite happy to see your reply. I was hoping that you would reply. I have always been your fan (ChiliBox). In fact I just bought your MIT essay strategy guide and signed up for the blog subscription. I am planning on hiring your services for my MIT essays.

Anyway, No there is no way I am making Ross and Yale my safety schools. In fact I don't believe in safety school at this point given my circumstances and aspiration. I don't want to get an MBA just for the sake of getting an MBA. If really wanted to do that I would have just gone to one of the schools in upper mid-west and my company would have paid for it. What I meant to say was I am not quite sure if they would be a great fit for me or not. I haven't visited those two schools and I don't have any vacation days left this year to visit them because I used up most of the vacation days on visiting other schools. :) I know how competitive the admission can be at those two schools, especially given my Indian Engg Male background.

I just wanted an expert opinion on the matter of GMAT retaking and I got one. Honestly I hated GMAT with the deepest passion in my heart after my second attempt because I should have gotten this score after my second attempt but no point crying over the spilt milk, is there now?

Thanks for your honest advice as usual. I really enjoy your blog posts and very honest no sugar coated answers. As I said It ain't for the faintheated.

ChilliBox - no idea it was you we were responding to! Maybe we were stalking you this time? ;-)

Love it that you've used all your vacation in visiting schools - that's the right way to roll! This getting-into-bschool thing can be all-encompassing for awhile. You've been at it for quite some time and hopefully this will be your year!!

Understood re: Ross/Yale - just wanted to call that out in case it was unclear to others. But who knows, maybe you have a shot at them?

Focus on the essays now - those may very well become the thing you get to detest with deepest passion... or maybe you will feel that way about EssaySnark soon enough! If you're gonna have essays reviewed then you may find that we're not your favorite Snark any longer!

Good to see your progress - we'll be there when you're ready for next steps!
