Hi

I am graduate student in Industrial engineering. I want to go for PhD in supply chain/ Operations management. Most of these degrees are offered in business schools, since my background is different I am slightly confused. I really want to get admit in top ranked business school.

I have strong academics (GPA- 4.0/4.0) and also my graduate school in among top 15 graduate schools in U.S.A.

I have taken GRE and Toefl but I have not taken GMAT. Is it mandatory to have GMAT score?
(My GRE : 1340 (760 Quant + 580 Verbal), Toefl : 103 (IBT)

I have taken courses in various areas of Supply chain at my university.

Different Courses I have done : Production planning, Scheduling, Inventory, Logistics, Six sigma, Engineering economy, Simulation, Statistics, Supplier management, Enterprise planning, Stochastic modeling and probability.

However I do not have no strong work experience or research experience. I worked after my undergrad in India for 8 months. Also masters program is non-thesis, will this matter?

What are my chances of getting admit?

I know I am asking too many questions at a time but please help me out.

I appreciate your help.

Hi and thanks for your question.

First things first: for most programs, you do not need to have taken the GMAT, the GRE is often sufficient. That said, your GMAT verbal seems low to me so you may want to see if you can nudge that up bit. Your quant score is fine.

In terms of needing research, most PhD programs really like you to have research experience since the whole point of a PhD is to train you to be an independent researcher. But...given your work experience and the fact that you have a masters this may or may not apply.

So...my suggestion is to visit the websites of PhD programs in your field and see what it is that they request. You can also call up professors in your area of interest and ask for a quick overview of the program by phone.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.
