Age and the MBA course?

by ebakeev » Tue Oct 27, 2009 8:04 am
I was on recent London MBA Fair and a few discussions made me think again about selecting criteria for my MBA course: one business school suggested me that it is usually more difficult for MBA graduates of my age (35-37 years old) to find a job than for a 27 years old graduate. The other school was telling me they developed their course specifically for MBA students of my age because graduates of my age group had different requirements than younger MBA students, for example, the learning style of older students was different from the one of younger students (they mentioned that older students statistically scored less on GMat than younger students, and this was one of indicators that the style of studying should be different for different ages), more work experience etc. Since then I started thinking if I should consider average student age during selection of my course and go for one with students of similar age to mine. However, this also means many top UK MBA courses like London Business School, Oxford Said or Cambridge Judge would not suit me because I will be 7-8 older than average. At the same time, if schools with students of similar age to mine cater their activities specifically to suit graduates of my age, it might be overall a better course for me than other, though officially higher ranking, MBA courses.
What is your opinion, does the age really makes a difference? At the end of the day, I suspect they mention average age in MBA brochures for a purpose...
Thanks,
