Profile Evaluation request

by leone » Sun Jun 08, 2014 5:20 am
Hi,

I'm a newbie on this forum and am looking forward to some help in evaluation of my profile. Also, I am totally lost as to which colleges and programs I should apply to. Will be grateful if you could give me a fair assessment of whether I have a shot at some of the preferred programs of my choice.

I landed a score of 730 on my first attempt at the GMAT (Q-50, V-39); IR - 7; AWA - 5.5 (goofed up the verbal section. Is a retake necessary? Will a 750+ score improve my chances drastically?)
10th grade - 89%
12th grade - 85% (merit rank holder in the state)
UG CGPA - 8.1 (of a scale of 10) - from among the top engineering colleges of the country
Also, have a master's degree (post grad in diploma management) from among the top institutes of the country

Work Experience:
1 yr as Procurement specialist for a mining giant in the manufacturing sector
3+ years in the Financial Planning & Analysis arm of an IT firm (awarded)

Extra-curriculars:
1. Writer/correspondent for a major sports website (awarded)
2. Associated with NGOs in organizing camps
3. Hosted and won several quiz contests
4. Won elocution contests at state level
5. Organized many events in college

Please let me know where do I exactly stand among the competing group. I am thinking of applying to Duke, Yale, Darden & Kellogg (1 Yr). Will be looking to apply to a few more. Please provide a list of the colleges where I may be competitive and also those which may be considered as sweet spots. The 1 yr program will be my first preference. I want to make a career in management consulting (also open to roles in corporate finance).

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey dude,
Well your GMAT is great so don't worry about that anymore.
Instead what I'd suggest is thinking about (and working on) the REST of your profile. Things like working at a camp and doing quizzes aren't really that relevant for an MBA, and at fist glance at your profile what is really missing for me is something UNIQUE, something that will make your profile JUMP off that page and tell me (as a theoretical AdCom member) from the dozens of similar applications, let's offer THIS guy a spot.

Know what I mean?

Best,
JF
