need help : profile evaluation

by dart2gmat » Fri Sep 17, 2010 2:10 pm
Hi Sir/Ma'm,

Would be really helpful if you please evaluate my profile as below.
I am looking for US schools mainly.I would like to apply majorly to
Tier 1 schools, and few Tier 2 schools as safe bet.

GMAT Score : 700 (first attempt last year : 550)
TOEFL : 111
Work exp : 3.5 years with world's largest enterprise software company.
Domain : IT Consulting (ERP Supply Chain and Financials) as Consultant / Module Lead
Milestones : Certified domain consultant, represented school in extempore/
elocution competitions, represented college at Enterpreneurship Development
Camp held at university campus,NSE (Indian stock exchange) certified in capital markets.
Negatives : No international experience, though have multi-ethnic client group
exposure since into a global consulting project ,bad GPA..pretty low..in percentage
=68..:(..(however,my university does not produce high-scoring toppers either..Indian
university where 70 is considered distinction and pretty tough to achieve..the GMAC
asked me to input my % during the exam and they had converted it to a meagre 1.8..:(..
will the school adcoms convert it in the same way?)
Anyhow,so now I am in a cross how to convince the adcoms..:(

->Co-founder of a social venture in the education domain - conceptualizing
self study solutions through library setup through public (literary) donations.
->Exposure in Operations working with a leading democratic
organization with a mission to enhance civic awareness,as a part of
the lead team in 2 projects devising tools and methodologies towards
better informed citizens in voting rights and electing leaders.
->Worked as a mentor to an underprivileged adolescent for a NGO,thus
infusing within mentee life survival skills.
->Worked as a lead volunteer for an NGO spearheading workshops towards
education system integration among challenged and normal children.
->Freelance advisor (business development and marketing) for a startup
distributorship firm in the FMCG domain.
->Freelance columnist to a couple of online magazines for social cause.
->On a different note,I also am the vocalist for a music band group at my
workplace..:)..and we have performed in commercial fests and performances
towards social causes.

Short Term Goal : My STG and 'why MBA now?' is because I want to use this
point in my career to move towards a career in Marketing Consulting/Strategy
where I would be able to make use of both my skills learnt at work and my
experiences away from work.

Long Term Goal : My LTG would be to work into my passion arena,i.e,Cause
Marketing, using my industry exposure from STG and my work with social ventures
till now and help build a bridge between corporates and social causes, one step
ahead of CSR.Finally,I would like to provide consulting solutions to them
to help them grow in funds, strengthen in Operations and create
a bigger social brand through industry to the public domain.

Please suggest Tier-1 and Tier-2 schools in US that match my profile and the work
I want to do in life.

Thanks a lot for your assistance.

Hi Sir/Ma'm,

I just happened to go through a GPA conversion table provided by Penn State Smeal
on their website for reference to int'l applicants and I see few tables in the sheet,
which converts various marking systems into GPA on a scale 4..Among all those,it has
a table which converts percentage into 4,and division into 4.

e.g in my case,my degree certificate shows I have secured a first class division which
converts into a 3.5 as per Smeal GPA sheet(first class+distinction = 4 as per their sheet)
whereas, a 68 percentage converts it into 1 (based on another table). How am I/or they
are supposed to know which table to follow in such a case?

Please help.

Hi Sir/Ma'm,

Please find below the GPA query to which I got a response from Penn State.

======================================================
Tanmoy,

Based on the information you have provided that your university has issued, you would be classified as the First Class . Therefore you would mark your GPA in our application as 3.5/4.0. Sorry again for the delay in our response and please email anytime should you have any other questions.

However,I am not sure if this would be the same way other schools would weigh a 68% (corresponding to first class,>70 to a first class+distinction as per my univ standards).

Thanks and Regards,

Hello,

The adcoms are very familiar with the grade scale of Indian colleges/universities, so they will understand your score in context.

Your profile is a mix, with some challenges and some strengths. Among the latter your extracurriculars and their relevance to your long-term goals stands out. I'd consider some reasonable reach schools to be Yale, Duke, NYU, Michigan. On-par schools to look at would be Cornell, UCLA.

Best regards,
