So Hoya, can I assume you went to Georgetown?

You have excellent metrics and an interesting career profile. Schools see many Asians with US experience, but fewer Americans with Asian experience and that should work in your favor. By all means emphasize the changes in the market that you have seen during your career. You want to show the committee that you will bring interesting and unusual perspectives to the classroom. Your volunteer work is also strong, presenting a multi-cultural experience.

All in all, you are definitely the sort of candidate who should be applying to the schools on your list. At this point I always tell my clients that they need to ask themselves one key question. Are you determined to go to business school next year to get the skills and education you need, or are you so happy in your career that you would not interrupt it (and spend six figures) for anything less than a top ten school? Both are valid life decisions. If you fall in the former category you should add a safety school or two. Not because you won't get into a top ten, but because you might not. The schools you are looking at are extremely competitive and turn down 80-94% of their applicants...and the applicant pools are exceptionally strong. In the end, no one is a shoo-in at the level you are targeting. We always see surprises. I know of one individual who applied to all of the top ten schools - was turned down at nine -- and got into Harvard.

In the end, at your level of competition schools are making tough choices between highly similar applicants. Your task will be to make your profile as intriguing and unusual as possible so that you will stand out from the crowd. A seasoned admissions consultant would be a great help in identifying those portions of your background which would be most appealing to an admissions committee.

Good luck,
Tani Wolff
