Private Tutor or Additional Prep Course?

by dlink32 » Tue Dec 29, 2009 9:23 am
Hi All,

As of last week, I completed my first attempt at the GMAT. Despite several months of preparation, I scored 590 (36Q, 35V). Prior to the exam, I studied all the OGs (extras included) and completed a prep course (Oxford seminars). I also practiced using the Manhattan prep exams and PowerPrep software. These materials were accurate of my performance on the real exam.

Going forward, I have an ambitious goal to score 700+ on the exam. While I'm eager to get started, I want to ensure that my approach is effective rather than repetitive. Although I believe reviewing the official guides could be valuable, I feel as if this will generate similar results.

I'm currently considering to register for another prep course (Princeton or Manhattan) or getting a private tutor. Can anyone provide some insight into the best option? While I recognize there is no exact formula, I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

I would advise to shy away from a class. Remember that classes aren't geared toward the 700+ students. If they were, everyone would be pissed b/c your avg GMAT student won't understand the harder questions.

As for a personal tutor, I would explore that option, but be careful as those can be hit and miss as well!

Research your tutor, ask to get a short "preview" session with him/her to get a feel of what type of person you are paying your hard earned dollars to.

Are they going to be worth it?
What is their strategy for getting you a 700? This is very important!!
Ask to speak to some previous students.

Hope that helps!
