If Jan spent 40% of her monthly income on housing and 20% less than she spent on housing on a car payment, what percent of her monthly income did she have left after making both her housing payment and her car payment?

(A) 20%
(B) 28%
(C) 42%
(D) 50%
(E) 60%

Can some experts find the best solution in this problem?

Let Jan's income = 100.
Since 40% is spend on housing, Jan's housing payment = 40% of 100 = 40.
Since the car payment is 20% less than the housing payment, Jan's car payment = 40 - (20% of 40) = 40 - 8 = 32.
What percent of her monthly income did she have left after making both her housing payment and her car payment?
(remaining income)/(total income) = (100 - 40 - 32)/100 = 28/100 = 28%.

The correct answer is B.

Let's pick a convenient number for Jan's total monthly income: 100 dollars.

Since she spent 40% of her income on housing, she spent 40 dollars on housing.

Since she spent 20% less than she spent on housing on a car payment, she spent 0.8 x 40 = 32 dollars on a car payment.

After making these payments, she had 100 - 40 - 32 = 28 dollars, or 28% of her monthly income, left.

Answer: B
