larger bottle

by nidhis.1408 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 1:42 pm
A full bottle contains 40% oil, 20% vinegar, and 40% water. The bottle is poured into a larger bottle, four times as big as the original. the remaining space in the larger bottle is then filled with water. If there was 8 ml of oil in the original bottle, how much water is in the final mixture?

IMO, the answer is 60mL
Approach - 1)Let volume of smaller bottle is 100mL
2)Volume of larger bottle is 400mL out of which 300mL is water.
3) For 40mL of oil, water in the final mixture is 300mL
For 8mL of Oil, water in the final mixture will be 60mL (by unitary method)

Since the smaller bottle is 40% oil and 40% water, the amount of oil = the amount of water.
Thus, oil = water = 8.
Since the percentage of vinegar is 20% -- half of 40% -- the amount of vinegar = 4.
Thus, the volume of the smaller bottle = 8+8+4 = 20.

Since the larger bottle is 4 times as big, the volume of the larger bottle = 4*20 = 80.
After the 20ml from the smaller bottle has been poured in, the amount of water needed to fill the larger bottle = 80-20 = 60.

Total amount of water = 8+60 = 68.

My mistake...I forgot to add 40 mL (initial volume of water)
So, for 40 mL of oil, water in the larger bottle is 340mL
For 8 mL of oil, water in the final mixture will be 68 mL

First bottle: Oil : Vinegar : Water = 40% : 20% 40% = 40 : 20 :40
When fill water and first bottle into the second bigger bottle, the rate will be: 40:20:340 = 4:2:34
The oil is 8ml
Based on the rate,we get the water will be 68
