Percentage Problem

by phoenix9801 » Sun May 20, 2012 2:39 pm
Jacob eats 1/5 of his daily caloric intake at breakfast and 4/15 at lunch. If he eats 1/2 of his remaining daily caloric intake by snacking, what portion of his daily caloric intake is left over for dinner?

Let Jacob's daily caloric intake = C
Then calorie intake at breakfast = C/5
Calorie intake at lunch = 4C/15
Remaining = C - (C/5 + 4C/15) = 15C/15 - (3C/15 + 4C/15) = 8C/15
Calorie intake by snacking = (1/2) * (8C/15) = 8C/30
Left over calorie intake = 8C/30

Therefore, calorie intake left for dinner =
8/30
Let the total number of calories = 30.
Breakfast = (1/5)30 = 6.
Lunch = (4/15)30 = 8.
Remaining calories = 30-6-8 = 16.
Snacking = (1/2)16 = 8.
Calories left for dinner = 16-8 = 8.
Dinner/total = 8/30 = 4/15.
