algebra issue

by sudi760mba » Sat Mar 14, 2009 3:41 pm
Together, Andrea and Brian weigh p pounds. Brian weighs 10 pounds more than Andrea. Brian and Andrea's dog Cubby weigh p/4 pounds more than Andrea. In terms of p, what is Cubby's weight?

(A) p/2 - 10
(B) 3p/4 - 5
(C)3p/2 -5
(D)5p/4 - 10
(E)5p-5

A=Andrea
B=Brian
C=Cubby

(1)A+B =p
(2)B=A + 10
(3)B+C= (p/4) + A

Replace B in equation 3 with A+10
A+10 + C = (p/4) + A

Subtract A from both sides
C+10 = (p/4)

4C + 40 = p
c= (p-40)/4

What am i doing wrong?

thanks.

A+B=P
B=A+10
c=A+B/4+A
2A+10=P
P-10/2=A
c=p/4+p-10/2
c=p/4+2p-20/4
3p-20/4-->3p/4-5 B
Let me know if you don't understand anything.

Together, Andrea and Brian weigh p pounds. Brian weighs 10 pounds more than Andrea. Brian and Andrea's dog Cubby weigh p/4 pounds more than Andrea. In terms of p, what is Cubby's weight

This is what is causing the problem.

Sudi, the way u did it is just fine with the problem worded as is.

However I think " Brian and Andrea's dog cubby" should be replaced by "Cubby weighs p/4 more than Andrea"

Then what Truplayer did is right. c= p/4+(p-10)/2

Can u check the question again?

Regards,
CR
