Therefore the product xy is either negative or equal to zero.

Note: We can individually eliminate the options too. But that is not really required as only one of the five options is correct. But if anyone is looking for that I'm giving the reasons of eliminating other options. The reason behind the elimination of C and D are clear from the above explanation. Option E is eliminated as it directly violates the result of (1). Option A is not true always. Thus eliminate it too.
