20% of the skiers that tried out for the ski patrol were selected. Of those that were not selected, 15 skiers were CPR certified and 17 were not. How many skiers tried out for the ski patrol?
  • A. 40
    B. 50
    C. 60
    D. 70
    E. 80

Hi,
This doesn't look to be a well-framed question. Assuming information is given about all of them to solve this.
20% were selected => 80 % were not selected = 15+17=32
80% of total =32. So, total = 40

Hence, A

let # be n
20% of n selected means n/5 selected.
4n/5 not selected. 15 certified, 17 not. thus total=15+17=32
4n/5=32 -> n=40
IMO A
