GMAT Prep ?? (Pounds and Crowns)

Global Stats

In a certain game, the units of currency of three countries are the crown, the shield, and the pound respectively. If 2 crowns equal 3 shields and 3 shields equal 4lbs, how many crowns equal 18lbs?

A. 9
B. 16
C. 18
D. 32
E. 36

Can someone please shed some light on this prob?

I would say A

2 crowns = 3 shields = 4 pounds
2 crowns = 4 pounds
1 crown = 2 pounds
9 crowns = 18 pounds

That was the same logic i was using....but i think you are correct..just wanted to see if i was going on the correct path....

I messed up. Over thinking the problem, I set the problem up as a ratio.

I see where it can be 9.

9 crowns = 18 lbs..same logic...

C:S: P=2x:3x:4x
therefore, C: P=1:2
So clearly 9 C=18 P

no logic required..
2c=3s........(1)
3s=4p........(2)
=>s=2/3c......(3)
substituting in (2)
=> 3*(2/3*C)=4p
=> c=2p
therefore: 18p=9c

We are given the following:

2 crowns = 3 shields

3 shields = 4 pounds

Thus, 2 crowns = 4 pounds. Now we can let x = the number crowns equal to 18 pounds and create the proportion:

2/4 = x/18

4x = 36

x = 9

Answer: A
