Word Problem: Algrebra Questoin

So I am working on problem 203 in MGMAT PS and although I earned the correct answer I am not sure of the algebraic answer. I have uploaded the answer from the navigator. I understand that you need to multiply the x out to remove it from the denominator but I don't understand why you don't multiply it to the (x+1) as well. Can anyone assist? Thanks much!
