Package

by zagcollins » Mon Jul 28, 2008 11:11 pm
A certain co. charges $6 per package to ship packages weighing less than 2 pounds each. For a package weighing 2 pounds or more, the co. charges an initial fee of $6 plus $2 per pound. If the co. charged $38 to ship a certain package, which of the following is the weight of the package, in pounds?

A.16
B.17
C.19
D.20
E.22

IMO B.

Let x be the weight above 2 pounds.

Then charge for first 2 pounds will be 6+2=8
8+2x=38
x=15

Total = 15+2=17

It can be done in another way

$38 - Initia Fee - 6$ remaining 32$ , 2$ per Pound hence 32/2 = 16 Kg.

16 Kg is the Answer.

IMO 16

$6 initial fee + 16lbs * $2/lb = $38
